It's the stock pads, every single one of us have brake dust build-up. Take a look at the spring/pins on your caliper, those bastards will be absolutely coated .

The front pads are awesome, they just generate a load of dust. I took mine off after ~15,000 miles and they were only 1/4 worn. It's not that they're wearing too quickly, they just make a lot of dust .

How are your new pads/rotors for this?

That's easy. Just buy the cheapest pads you can find. The friction material will be so hard they'll last a lifetime. Of course they won't stop the car as well but that's the trade off. Competition pads, which is exactly what we have, produce a lot of dust. Learn to live with it.

How old is your car? I'll buy your stock pads if you change them.

The pad material isn't sluffing off all over the wheels, the rotors are actually darkening (because the pads were properly bedded immediately after installing the pads/rotors) as the pad material adheres to the surface. The Hawk HPS stop just as hard as the Ferodos (sp) do for every day driving, where I think they would give out is under track conditions as they're not intended for hot lapping around a circuit.

If my stock pads weren't ruined when I did the swap to the R1s (long story short they were pushing into my stock rotor, the pads when removed were scorched, etc) I would have stuck with the Ferodo. So far as the Hawk HPS are concerned for normal every day driving (which I do 99% of the time) they behave well in town, they bite hard when conditions call for it and they aren't blasting my wheels with loads of brake dust like the stock pads did.

It's a trade-off, want performance oriented pads intended for track, stick with the stockers and deal with the brake dust. Want good performance for every day use that still stop well and generate slim to no brake dust, the Hawk HPS seem to be a good bet .

BTW. Congrats on the new car. I'm sure you'll get to loving it, as much as everybody here, very quickly. Before you start modding take a look around on this site to see where your Cobalt SS/TC fits in.
