putting a muffler on a side exit exhaust
putting a muffler on a side exit exhaust
just kind of a curious question to see what anyone else has done...
but for anyone who has or had a side exit exhaust what did you do come inspection time to pass by having a muffler?
basically, i have my side exit exhaust, which has no muffler on it. i have a catted downpipe, so i can pass inspection to the point of the downpipe, but as for the exhaust its simply a pipe from the catted downpipe that connects to the next pipe and exits out. so i have no muffler on my exhaust.
i havent really looked under my car in seeing what i have in terms of clearance, but id rather not have to swap on a different exhaust with a muffler just to get through inspections once a year.
so has anyone put a muffler on a side exit, or know of any information on what kind of muffler and where abouts it could fit on the side exit?
im figuring some sort of mini muffler, or a very flat muffler could fit under the car. honest to god truth is i would rather not have to weld on a muffler, but im just trying to weigh my options on what i should do come inspection time.
basically if getting a muffler on there is going to be a pita (and im about 90% sure it will be), then i think i should just get a cheap custom exhaust built together to go from the first pipe of the side exit out the rear instead and just swap back afterwards. and if that doesnt work im thinking i would just have to buy the cheapest catback i could find and just slap it on to pass inspection.
just trying to get some ideas here... my guess is putting a muffler on the side exit would be too much work and pose some risks in terms of clearance.
one more dumb question... but you do need a muffler to pass inspection right? haha
i mean i do have a cat on my downpipe so figure i will be ok on emissions, its just coming down to a point of how loud my exhaust is. which honestly it isnt THAT loud. its definitely up there in terms of noise, but i have heard plenty of truck and even some car exhausts which are louder.
im just waiting for the first cop to see the empty cut-out on my rear lip right now (will be ordering an rk sport lip with no cut-out soon) and thinking i have no exhaust and having to explain the side exit exhaust. the sound of the exhaust is great, i think it sounds awesome, just wondering about what to do come inspection time.
btw i live in MA and i drive an 09 ss/tc
so it seems like you could theoretically pass inspections if your exhaust isnt deemed to loud by the inspector. since i still have the cat on the downpipe i think i could pass inspection aslong as i find a non-dickface mechanic who wouldnt complain about the exhaust noise level.

yeah the guys that did my inspection last time seemed pretty cool so im going to give them a shot and see what they say about the loudness of my exhaust before they inspect it.
from what ive read its like completely speculative on the guy doing the inspection. aslong as you have a cat, some mechanics dont even check or care about the loudness of your exhaust.
as with my side exit, it definitely sounds like its within legal sound limits at idle and when just driving smooth. its still loud, but not as bad as some trucks or fart-can cars. now when you get on the gas its a completely different story. when you accelerate at any decent rate it will get loud, still might be within specs of the 96 db limit, but at WOT this thing is LOUD.
so im figuring with a cool mechanic and aslong as they dont give it alot of gas i should be all set. otherwise ill be going the glasspack route.

it does all depend on the mechanic..... some guys might go thru the whole checklist and put your car on the lift just to look at ur suspension and see if theres a cat, etc and might even just glance at , ur car and fail it cuz its modded.. people are gay just talk to them first, make sure they are cool...
In mass ANY modification is illegal. If you go to a legit place they WILL fail u with a side exit.
By rights you can't have a license plate holder in mass. It doesn't matter if you have a cat or a quiet exhaust if it's not stock and they know it they will fail you.
That being said many people will overlook the exhaust if you can pass the computer test and slip them a 50 spot. I passed with my side exit when I did exactly that. It has a resonator and a muffler on it BTW. And it's for sale.

its true, in mass you really cant do **** to your car.. i recomend harr toyota on golstar BLVD worcester, they are cool poeple there , and its a huge place ,,,, idk honestly really anything u do to ur car, even lowering it can make u fail lol... they cant prove **** tho about whats stock or not thats why if they are gay with u, just take ur car somewhere else.
i hate mass... the most corrupt state in the US by far if you ask me. so many dumb laws here and they do anything to take your money.
im planning on finding work in RI and moving down there soon... couldnt come any sooner.
