Rebuild f35 or swap it with another? 4.45 gears

Rebuild f35 or swap it with another? 4.45 gears

Okay so if you guys have been following my car you'll know I have a fully bolted ss sedan and will be installing my zfr when I get home from this deployment. Currently have the stock drivetrain all the way to the flywheel. Okay so here's the question.... Assuming my f35 makes it through the dyno tune (it will be boost ramped) and my clutch or tranny starts acting up what do you guys recommend. If I drop my transmission at all I will be swapping the clutch and transmission same time. So should I look for 4.45 gears or a 4.45 transmission to swap mine out and sell mine? Would it be cheaper labor wise to rebuild my transmission with the new gears? What do you guys think...? I know 4.45s are hard to come by....but i have seen them for sale before and I know someone else will them eventually. Thanks guys!

Email Gloria at Powell racing and have her send you a 4.45 cryo'd trans. That's your best bet for longevity. It's really not a matter of if, but when, the trans will go, unless you just aren't going to go wide open in 3rd. May as well do it as long as your case is still good or you will be paying a full core charge on top of it, to get it. That's my advice.

I would buy a 4.45 and do it all at once.

You can recoup some money selling your current trans in one piece.

so buy a 4.45 and swap it out and sell my stocker. Okay. Dumb question. With the zfr will my clutch or tranny explode first? Assuming it survives the dyno tune xD

Your stock clutch is not going to hold one pull lol. If you can afford the 4.45, go that route, otherwise a 4.05 is a cheap alternative with a decent clutch.

tell me how there is people running the stock clutch and transmission on a zfr then? There is also people making close to 380-400tq on the k04 and don't slip on the stock clutch? If I boost ramp it the clutch will hold up. How long afterwards? No clue.

you can drive the stock transmission on the zfr, but everytime you get on it in 3rd, expect the worst. Thats not how i want to drive my car. The stock clutch held trifecta for about a week with a ramp then started slipping in 3rd and 4th, if you want a really really slow boost ramp to save your clutch, theres no point in upgrading the turbo, you just killed the best part about the zfr. Save up do it right, you'll be happier driving your upgraded car with less worries.

Last time I checked out of curiosity I saw CED selling new ones for 5k. Expensive SAAB gearboxes in these things.

Powell rebuilds them in Canada, but it's worth it to swap in an LSJ 4.05 on the cheap, they are around $600-$800 used with LSD.

just dont call a parts yard for a used 4.05 lsd. they all want over $1200 used. at least the ones I called did.

If you break your trans and get another for a replacement from a junkyard or from somewhere local, get it looked over or rebuilt. Its not worth it to just get a trans from somewhere and throw it in with out knowing what it looks like. You could have problems with it from the get go and then be in a stupid trans situation again.

don't forget the hhr ss/tc comes with a 4.05 f35 trans in them also and can be had cheap

some info for you all 05 and 06 ss/sc cars with g85 and 05 06 redlines with comp package came with a quaife diff 07 up ss/sc and all tc with g85 do not have a quaife unit it is a saab version helical differential it works just as good but not as smooth

So look for an older 4.05 LSD transmission for the right price? The 4.05 will obviously hold up better than the 3.82s but will it still hold up enough? I found a couple for great prices and I might go that route. Oh and I got a great deal on a zfr so I had to jump on it, plus my stocker is blown xD ******* seals

Basically I have 3 options, all involved a ky stage 3 clutch. Zfr swapped balt.

Option 1: keep my f35 with 3.82 gears and pray every night it doesn't explode
Option 2: find a f35 4.05 gears LSD and swap that in and sell my f35.
Option 3: buy a f35 4.45 gears LSD swap it then sell my f35.

What do you guys think? Will 4.05s hold up to the zfr fine or will I still have issues? After a tranny swap do I need a retune???
