stock k04 overboost failure?
 
Hey!

I recently dropped my original turbo off to be checked out for a rebuild;
I replaced it with my backup at just over 100k miles, because it was leaking oil (smoke coming out the exhaust);
I replaced it with my backup - taken from a car that had roughly 25k miles.

I am starting to notice that after getting on it, after I let off, a puff of oil will (more often than not) be seen exiting my exhaust... which brings us back to why I dropped off my original turbo for a rebuild.

The rebuilder called me yesterday and said that it is too far gone to rebuild;
He used the term "overboost" as a means of citing why the turbo was shot.
Honestly, before that phone call, I had only heard the term applied to Ford ecoboost vehicles.

I am the original owner of my car;
I while under powertrain warranty I was stock then GMS1;
I have run (post-warranty) Trifecta and HPT tunes - but nothing crazy - nothing for any period of time that would have done more than GMS1 levels of boost.
My car is, and always has been my daily driver.

Going forward, can anyone help me to understand why this rebuilder is telling this turbo is shot - citing evidence of overboost??

How do I avoid it, or is this just a matter of fact deal when using GMS1 levels of boost?

Is this a matter of maybe a too aggressive boost ramp? - or is this purely a boost level deal...

If my understanding is correct;
higher boost = higher temps = higher rate of fatigue
I am also wondering if a too aggressive boost ramp heats up the turbo too quickly, which prematurely wears it out...

Overboost can be when you spike high boost then settle too ur desired. Or if ur car is like mine and never trips a code for boost leaks, ur turbo could actually be boosting more to compensate for a boost leak. So you would see say 20 psi at the manifold, but at the turbo its actually boosting 25 psi . mind you that would be a decent leak. Basically something caused ur turbo too spool faster then its designed too
