i have got the gm turbo upgrade kit it has been in for about 8k well i am not to easy on it. the dealer said i streched the head bolts and that is what blew the head gasket and with the coolant going in the exhaust port i cracked the manifold and the turbo on the exhaust side. i dont have any pics of the cracked maniflod or turbo but i do have some of the motor torn down.http://s828.photobucket.com/albums/z...t=DSCN0565.jpg

slowbalt84 11-28-2009 09:21 PM

trust me i do feel bad about this all but how did you polish your valve cover like that?

mkriebs 11-28-2009 11:07 PM

Wow, that's nasty. I am definitely putting head bolts into my build plans.

Sounds like their GMS1 stretched the head bolts or your head wasnt torqued down properly in the first place. A lot of us are running more boost than the stage kit and havent had problems. Hope they didnt deny the warranty

Who is a lot of people??

mkriebs 11-29-2009 12:52 AM

Like 2 in the last week. Whoopity doooo...

slowbalt84 11-29-2009 12:57 AM

2 blown cars a week X 52 weeks in a year = 104 blown engines a year. lol just being dramatic

mkriebs 11-29-2009 01:02 AM

Yes, you are, lol. But, it is something to think about when doing a build. Pistons and head studs are a must IMO.

Gimpster 11-29-2009 01:13 AM

GMS1 lifting the head seems unlikely, unless it was a bad day on the ole engine assy line. Think of the few people running bigger snails and/or a bunch of us who just about run infinite boost with no lift issues YET.

Coming from other turbo 4cyls I'm surprised we DON'T have more head lifting issues, but it seems GM got a good clamp on these heads.

I'd be curious if there are some better / high resolution shots of the head gasket top and bottom. Its hard to see in the pictures, but it doesnt look like any sugar on the piston domes nor is there any particularly clean piston dome. Don't get me wrong, there are a billion ways for a HG to fail.

Pictures of the valve side of the head would be nice too if you have em.

In general what happened, did you start puffing out a nice white smoke show? How much, if any, coolant got into the oil? Coolant in the oil is pretty much hell on bearings.

Also can you define "crack on the turbo housing"? Its pretty common for the hot side to hairline on these and isnt anything to order a new turbo over. I believe there is even a TSB out there to that effect.

the oil was going in the combustion chamber and in the oil but not much in the oil it really didnt smoke oddly enough it would just pour water out of the tail pipe like a faucet.
the crack is not a little crack in the manifold ther are three cracks all leading to one point and a peice is about to come out of it and in the turbo just one big crack that is bigger than my thumb nail.
