memphisr24 09-22-2008 03:56 PM

Yeah definately not supposed to sound like that...take it back...turbos sound more like air being sucked in...at least mine sounds like that and I love it

ToTaLeD 09-22-2008 03:58 PM

twincharged from the factory? LUCKY

Tomtwtwtw 09-22-2008 04:26 PM

Given the tiny-ness of our turbo, under boost it will make a high-pitched whine. Almost like that ringing in your ears kind of thing...hard to describe it accurately. If you roll up the windows, you'll heard more of the "whoosh" through the intake rather than the turbo itself.

Is it whining all the time or only when you first start it up or when you are in boost? Mine whines a little when in boost and on cold startup.

MapOfTaziFoSho 09-22-2008 04:44 PM

In all honesty, there is a little whine and it is perfectly normal. :twothumbs

Tomtwtwtw 09-22-2008 07:42 PM

Yes, you will also hear it spinning during warm up...car is running very rich and the exhaust is enough to turn it a bit. Totally different than the noise at full boost, though. Would almost seem that the car at cold idle opens the wastegate enough so that the turbo warms up. No idea if this is the case, though.

cobalt85691 09-22-2008 11:00 PM

this is a loud and very noticable whine that just started

MapOfTaziFoSho 09-22-2008 11:05 PM

Then take it to the dealership...

08inBama 09-23-2008 04:46 AM

uhhh....I think you bought a S/c SS

USMCFieldMP 09-23-2008 05:30 AM

My friend's SRT-4 started doing that...

...it blew apart 3 weeks later. His was from running TOO much boost on it for TOO much time.

Horrible example...that is akin to saying something like my example below:

"Yeah, my friend felt the same way, but it turned out he had cancer and died three days after having similar symptoms to what you're describing..."

under what conditions? idle, WOT, part throttle, etc?

turbos will make a whining noise when they spool up

Hey, don't joke around about that. My friend's skittle started whining loudly and then he had a heart attack and died the next week.

In all seriousness though, get a recording of it. A turbo will make some noise but if it's really loud that's not normal.

Try to compress a bunch of air through small orifices at high speed quietly then get back to me, k?

try to understand what the word whine means. A turbo should never make a loud whining noise. It's not the air compressing that makes the noises. It's the way the air is being compressed. Turbochargers work extremely different than a positive displacement supercharger.

One's interpretation of the word whine is a very large factor here. Personally I believe the sound from the turbo to be more of a whistle, but that is just me.

he said its whining like a supercharger, not like a jewish girl on prom night
