It's from a defect in the casting(whatever it's called) process they used when making the blocks.

Nothing causes it. It was how the block was made at the time of production. People with an 08 build date seem to have the problem mostly.

It's actually the early `09 cars that have the issue, mostly. Very few late 08 cars. Stupid Styrofoam casting.

Never mind. It's 11/08. Should I be worried? Is it a common date to have the problem?

Mine has ~74000 miles. I'm not gonna freak out about it. But being that I'm in college at the moment I get kinda worried. If something were to happen I'd be paying for my car payment while trying to save up and buy zzp's engine. I really hope it doesn't happen though

No reason to constantly worry about it. If you get it you get it, but you probably won't. If you do, you'll just lose coolant into the oil. May as well just keep enjoying your car.

Also, I'll tear mine apart in December so I might have pictures of what happens. With any luck I'll be able to cut it out and have a metallurgist take a look at it.

It would suck but worrying about it won't change anything. Just do like emechan said and enjoy your car.
