06 SS/SC Performance upgrade help!

Hey guys, I just joined this site today because im going to be getting my 2006 SS/SC Cobalt on Monday! I really want to make this car 'mine'.. I want it to stand out and suprise people. The car looks penominal, the only appearence changes I will make is put some HID headlights on, a new front bumper, and maybe some LEDs. I'll get that stuff on my own since it doesn't cost to much. Now what I am worried about is my performance. I'm not sure what upgrades it has already but I'll find that out on Monday. I'm going to be getting alotta money here in the next few months ($2000 or more), and I want to know whats the best upgrades I can make to make this car fast and beat people who think this will be a slow car.. What upgrades should I make to make it sound good and be fast without making it unrealiable (like breaking the var).??? Thanks guys!

first, get a flux capacitor. you'll be able to time travel back in time and invest in apple so you can have boatloads of cash for your car. then when you are swimming in cash, get a cai. and maybe an exhaust. as for the millions of dollars left over, that is for you to decide on what to do.

welcome to the site!

This link^ should help you out.
Price everything out on zzperformance.com or ottperformance.com which are two of the larger dealers for our car

lol. however once you have the boatloads of cash, a cobalt is gonna seem like a pathetic car compared to the ferarri/lambo/bugatti/whatever fast and cool car you own. so at that point, keep the cobalt stock and put it in the corner, just in case you screw up and lose all the money and have to go back in time and put more money into apple.

seriously though, lots of info around. cooling mods, 60lb injectors, 2.8" pulley, header/exhaust/intake and a tune (from a reputable tuner tuning your car, not a mail order tune) and you will be able to shut up most of the nay sayers.

first off welcome to the site! and as previously posted that modification guide is a charm. but before u start modding its best to have a goal that u would like to obtain then build around that

I agree with this guy.

Is this car ur dd??
the air box mod with a k&n drop in filter works well.
other wise zzp or ottp have the best true 3" intakes.
zzp stage 3 with 50# injectors and a 2.8 pulley
if most of us were to do it again this is were i would start.
then get a down pipe and exhaust
3" cated to a 2.5" cat back seems to be the best dd combo.

Another quick question, what is the 06 supercharged stocks horsepower because my goal is to get it in the upper 2's with a very quick start off the line.

stock is like 205 @ crank. r u lookin high 2's @ crank or wheel? if ur lookin for a quick start off the line may i suggect some powell rotated trans mounts so u can launch ur car and not snap an axle....

LamboW9 08-20-2012 06:16 PM

best bet to even get close to your goal while staying with the stock supercharger is probably going to be #60 injectors and a 2.8 pulley or smaller. because it is your DD i would suggest staying at a 2.8 pulley and not going smaller. if your going a bit more extreme but like to keep that snap off the line you can buy the Harrop TVS supercharger, you will need to get it tuned properly and all the supporting mods such as full exhaust, ZZP S3 h/e, dual pass, opt b, and an intake but that would definitely hit your goal while staying reliable and quick off the line. these are not allll of the supporting mods needed to run the best but this will keep you safe. the rest might be things such as rotated trans mounts, or just trans mounts in general, and maybe some Stage 2 axels.

Tbone143476 08-20-2012 08:22 PM

I dont really wanna put another supercharger on it because thatll really take a hit on my budget.. I really would like to stay with the stock

Tbone143476 08-20-2012 08:28 PM

Would it be bestif I bought a ZZP Stage kit? I was looking at the Stage 3

sjc0013 08-20-2012 08:30 PM

Stage kits are great, just don't forget your cooling mods. I would also suggest getting your car custom tuned locally rather than a canned tune

Tbone143476 08-20-2012 09:04 PM

This is what im looking at getting, the ZZP stage 3 kit that includes a 2.8 pulley, 60 injectors, h/e, dual pass, NGK 4644 spark plugs gapped at .035, ZZP Modular pulley system, I dont know which option to pick for the belt? I either pick not needed (so gm belt), over sized tensioner pulley, shorter belt, or zzp adjustable tensioner??? Which one should I choose? and it says it includes a ZZP 1.0 pcm. I dont really know what that is, But i know it gives me a option to do my own tuning, or get the pcm core charge ($200)? I dont know what to get there. And what I really want to know is what all this is going to really do to my car? Also I'd be getting the wideband and intercepter gauges and OTTP Rotated trans mounts! Thanks guys

Superbalt06 08-20-2012 09:22 PM

I have those mods on my car and it adds some nice horsepower. Nothing to brag about but good for a dd. Have chevycobaltss3 up there tune you one day when he's in Indy and you'll make some nice numbers. :twothumbs

LamboW9 08-20-2012 09:24 PM

thats a good kit, don't forget to get the option B kit for your cooling. That will purge all the air from your system after installing the h/e and dual pass endplate. You want the shorter GM stage 2 belt. you would not need to change your tensioner with that belt from what i understand. The tune is really up to you, but like SJC said it would be better to get a custom tune. if you don't know where to go for it then you can get away with the ZZP tune for a while which is what the pcm is. the pcm is where your tune is calibrated.

don't forget to get a full exhaust and cold air intake. it is not recommended to run that stage kit on a stock exhaust. it would also be difficult for you to put that to the ground without at least the poly trans bushings.

Tbone143476 08-20-2012 09:42 PM

Whats the option B? Could you shoot me a link to that? And I would also be getting the 3in cobalt CAI, and 3in catback exhaust.. Now for the cat back, should i get the muffler delete option or the ZZP 3 chambered muffler? and the turbo version or supercharged version (+$80)

LamboW9 08-20-2012 10:36 PM

ZZPerformance - Option B for Dual Pass IC #ZZ-OPTBK

That is option B and yes you do want the bracket, life will be simpler with it.

Cars are not legal and will not pass inspection in many states without a catalytic converter, they are what siphon the pollutants out of the exhausts to make them healthier for the environment. You need a header back exhaust which means (header, downpipe, cat-back). if you are ordering everything from zzp then it is personal preference as to what you get but to be street legal you should get it catted and keep the resonator. and if you get a 3" cat-back make sure the downpipe you get is 3" as well.

Tbone143476 08-21-2012 05:12 PM

Okay, thanks man! Sounds great, one last thing, can you shoot me a link for poly trans bushings, i cant find them!

LamboW9 08-21-2012 09:52 PM

you can either go with poly inserts which basically you just change the bushings out of your stock trans mounts which changes it from stock (rubber) to better and stiffer polyeurathane. ZZPerformance - LSJ Polyurethane Transaxle Mounts #ZZ-PLYTNSMNT-LSJ

or you can go with rotated trans mounts instead which line up your drivetrain and engine better but they cost significantly more. ZZPerformance - Rotated Front Trans Mount #ZZ-RTMNT-FNT and ZZPerformance - Rotated Rear Trans Mount #ZZ-RTMNT-REAR

DOnt forget to check ur ic pump to make sure it works if its not working then that has to be replaced first otherwise the mods will just cause u to heat soak.
