2.85" Pulley Help
Hey Guys,
I just got a pulley in from Nate (which, by the way is EXCELLENT and I encourage everyone to buy form him), and me and my friend (pinoypapi198369) were trying to put it on tonight (in the dark, yeah we know, not the smartest move, should have waited for the mornign but we were both so excited and wanted it on). Me and pinoypapi198369 went to my place to unbolt the Stage 2 pulley and put it on. We had light, in my garage, and so we went to work, popped the hood and were trying to loosen the stage 2 blue-bolts with the tool that came with it. We noticed the pully kept moving as we tried to unscrew the bolts. Then....we heard a *snap* and low and behold the piece (end) snapped off, and fell down somewhere. Then we tried to get a piece that would fit similarly, and it fell off (it later turned up as he was backing out of the drive way). So, in the first step we had probelms and I couldn't find a "How-To" on how to replace the stage 2 pulley with a smaller one. I ahd printed peices and bits that gave the basics on how to take the pulley off. Can you all help us. We have this brand new, sexy, polished pulley with new screws in a package that is begging to be mated to the Eaton M62 sitting in his engine bay. Can you guys tells us what we need to do in relation to getting the pulley off and getting the new one on? |
yea anything would be great!

I don't know if I am understanding you... a 15mm wrench is needed to loosen the tensioner. I used a very small ratchet with the GM bit on the end... I left the belt tight untill I had atleast broken loose all the bolts, then I loosened the tensioner, pulled the belt off to the side, and got the rest of the bolts out, and then just reversed the process and put on my SHINEY 2.85 Pulley from Nate, and then once again, used the 15mm wrench to loosen the tensioner,( pushing towards firewall) and I was done, took me about 20 minutes!

on the tensioner do u push forward and then pull the belt off? i guess thats the part where we got confused, sorry for the stupid questions but we were confused.

Leave the belt on untill you have the bolts loose, you will have to hold the pulley still to do it. Then Push the tensioner towards the firewall of the car (towards the rear!), Once you do that, the belt will loosen up enough to just pull it off!

Our main problem was when we were trying to break the bolts loose. The piece in the stage 2 kit broke as we were trying to break the bolts. The pulley also kept moving as we tried to unbolt them. Can we only use the stage 2 piece, or is there another size we could use to unbolt the pulley?
|
Nope that bit is specialized to it, there should have been two of them in the box, one for like a screwdriver, and the other made to go on a 1/4" ratchet! While you still have the belt on, hold on to it as hard as you can, that is how I did it! You just have to do what you can to keep it from spinning on you!

Okay...thanks M-Dub. If you could, give another overview of lwhat we're to do, in the order you did it in?
|
yea i still have the screw driver piece hopefully i can just use that we'll mess with it again sometime soon

1.) While belt is still on pulley, loosen the four (4) blue bolts from the snout of the S/C, do not remove them yet.
2.) Use the 15mm open ended wrench, put it on the little notch on top of the tensioner, and push it back towards the rear of the vehicle. 3.) Slide belt off of the S/C pulley, and lay it aside, I did not take it all the way off! 4.) Hold on to the pulley, and continue removing the bolts from the S/C the rest of the way, and slide the old pulley off. 5.) Put your new "SHINEY" pulley on the snout and tighten the bolts up as much as you can without the belt being on. 6.) Use your 15mm wrench, and push the tensioner back towards the rear of the car again, and slide the belt back over the pulley! 7.) Make sure belt is lined up correctly, take care to insure that it is not misaligned and is on track to the crank pulley as well! (you will be able to tell if it isn't!) 8.) Tighten the bolts back up with the supplied GM bit, take care not to over tighten as your new pulley is alluminum! 9.) Now test drive and enjoy, then go home yell, cuss and scream while you drink beer (or Rootbeer if under 21 of course)! :D |
Thank you so much M-Dub! +rep for being as helpful as you have been!

Not a problem... just returning the favors I recieved when I was doing the same thing a few months ago! Glad I could help, refer to my picture so you can see the little notch I am referring to for the 15mm wrench, it is what is circled in yellow!

i'd definately use it. i've been looking for a how-to on a pulley swap from a stage 2 pulley forever....
|
so you ended up getting the bolts out?
|
i still haven't been able to get bolts out, they're way too tight. I'm thinking about taking the super charger out and using a drill to get those freakin bolts out. what do u guys think? or maybe a better suggestion to get them out.

GO back to the dealer and have them break them loose! I know my dealer would help out with that!!

I just went out and tried to get my stage 2 bolts off to put our 2.85 on and they wont budge either! Dealer obvioulsy used loctite on them. Im afraid if I try any harder its gonna strip that special head on the bolt or bust the special socket. Im using a 18" breaker bar and they still wont budge.
|
