Bought my 2006 cobalt ss/sc in Feb. 2015 & placed my first mod order sept. 26th 2015 with a plan in mind, to build an American boosted 4 cylinder car to compete in auto cross & time attack events.

Japanese cars are the norm & by far most popular time attack 4 cylinder cars for many reasons but we intend to take our minority American 4 banger to the track & not only compete but win these events 🤔😉
👍🏼

Today ill be hopefully starting he car for the first time since December 2016 prior to a lot more work & changes to the car since last season. Below is a list of mods (car was stock when I bought it) I did all the work myselfand I'll post some pics. Hopefully I'll have some results to post here soon, dyno, time slips, auto cross & time attack results.
I hope you like the car, if I can help you in anyway with your build or if you have questions, let me know!

why be cheap and use stock rods and you do not need to reinvent the pcv system there are ways of making it better and a single disk clutch will hold more then what you need

How do you like that LS4 TB for autocross? I have considered it but throttle control, trying to get traction out of a corner, is hard enough with the LSJ TB.

I would think it would be good for drag racing but autocross might be infuriating. I hardly even have a chance to go full throttle with my setup although I do have an open diff. so I have to really manage the torque coming out of a corner or it's just tire spin and smoke. I have never driven with an LS4 TB but have heard it is very sensitive/jerky.

Seriously lmao. You just thouroghly evaluated my mod list, the most common jist of your notes was "waste of money" "too expensive", then call me cheap for using the factory short block woowww
every single part on that list except the header I purchased brand new.

the header I purchased from Advise.

But I can assure you, using the factory short block isn't me being cheap ha

& I could go back through your remarks and explain who what where when why and how every decision was made & for what reasons. This project car is "purpose built" as some would say.

But to reply to the last couple things you had an issue with, the twin disk clutch I feel like is pretty self explanatory? $2k on a clutch set up that will never even be close to maxed out means that to me, it's worth spending the extra money to not have any down time due to failure etc.

And as far as the pistons go, I intend on remaining with the factory shortblock for as long as possible, being the current condition of it donesmt warrant that purchase atm & in previous builds I've done after installing the forged and coated internals somw power was robbed from both the cars & in one case a Piston cooked after 800 miles & 500 were break in lol same set up was in the car for 3k miles w stock pistomsnand they were still going strong when changed oit

Love it! Would never go back.
Tracks are plenty sticky & I run road coarse tires. Of coarse you're always riding that fine line between wreck & win so accelerating with 26psi of instant boost out of corners has its sketchy moments but that is this cars single biggest advantage. Many of the turbo cars cant or don't spoil fast enough to hit full boost before having to hit the brakes for the next corner

I haven't read anything good on these for the street. Can't the area rate be adjusted to make them a little more tolerable?

the ls4 throttle body takes some getting used to, thats for sure. it took me some more tweaking with the tune than just setting the idle scalar to 4500, but once i got it sorted the car is very driveable on the street with a controlled foot. and id agree that it makes power, midrange was like a whole different car.

I run a stage three puck clutch and stage three pressure plate. I smoked the stage two. It's a little jerky at idle but when on the gas it's as smooth as silk. You will love your stage two. Mine (see sig) is not as modified as yours but it is run flat out to run with the LS cars. Best money I spent was the $1000 dyno tuner. Yep he is that good and my junk don't blow up. Find the best guy in your state and let him make the changes and then tune it. Pay him. Huge improvement. The LS throttle body is a treat. We are typically ***** out like you will be on the coarse so you will love it. Out of a turn you will be boosting in an instant. 1/2 to full throttle has a ton of control right where you need it to keep it spinning or not. Again a good tuner will dial that in for you. Forget max HP because it does not work. Tell him you want max control. Technically my car is by far the biggest POS out of the guys I run with so I spent time with a suspension tuner and even had a custom rack built. Most run 1:1 steering. I run 1.2:1 and have a lot more control in a drift. Tire pressure is set constantly as conditions and temps change. Use 1/4-1/2 pound incrments and get it right. The rest or 80% is the driver. Drive that car to the edge until it spins, let those tires hyper spin untill your off the track and go in too hot all of the time. When the finals come you will have all those poor conditions under control with your "second nature". When going into a turn you should be looking at the exit and next straight. Trust your brain to get you thru and it will. Nothing sweeter than blowing the doors off of expensive cars with experienced drivers. Sounds like you have the car to do it. Good luck!

Stumpalump, I'd rather have to power and not need it, rather than need it and not have it, is my take on the tune. Everyone is differnt though.
There are times, depending on the track & corner that while accelerating @ wot out of the corner, I find myself often slightly riding the brake pedal some while accelerating to keep the tires from spinning or the car from pushing forward.
Allows me to accelerate at max boost without fwd problems lol

We run turns on and up hills so sometimes we have to bang down a gear and let the clutch slip to keep the revs up. The instant your ready for full power it's as fast as side stepping the clutch. The little Lsj is quick in a light car if your not afraid to beat it. I can launch out of a hole the V8's or turbo subi's just bog in. We almost all run stock rev limit because if your full throttle and boost and the tires break loose or get air born it revs 1000 past redline. Helps the motor and trans stay together.
I feel that if you build it to run right and no so much for full tilt you can beat it harder and worry free. Worry free is faster. Sure I'm giving up 6hp at 7500 rpm but how often are you there except for drag racing? Even drag racing if your setup to run and shift like a rice rocket you end up fast. Tune it so you can beat it on a track not for a drag race. Leave that for the majority on this site that just want a fast street car. Fast street car....What a joke. I'd rather have a beater that I can beat than a fast car that is going to kill me or put me in jail. Too bad so few on these car sites get it. I commend your efforts and will say to not follow anybody's advise including mine. Take notes and run what works for you.

Ya you're gonna be outclassed.

You can't power a fwd around an autocross course. Especially something as torquey as a LSJ.

The reason Honda's do so well is they're light and keep up high corner speeds.

I pointed out where your spending money you that there is need for so that way you can spend the money were it would better benefit the package

if you cooked a piston that quickly you or the keyboard operator made a mistake and yes you will lose some power with forged parts they are heavier but you wont lose omg power with them 5 to 10 hp is about it mounting a fan over the blower is not going to help and deleting the stock oil cooler and using an air to air out front will greatly put you miles ahead on keeping engine temps in check make sure you run -10 lines and run a 160 t-stat also as for valve springs the stiffer spring is not a good a good choice

When I raced sailboats teams would spend hours wet sanding the hull and tuning their rigging. We would spend the time practicing turns and putting up the sails faster. Guess who smoked the fleet week after week?
Drag racing needs the best car and good driver. He needs the best driver and a good car. Wanna bet we never hear results back from him?

I'll take that bet .
2 weeks ago I trailered the car 12 hours to get tuned and do some dyno pulls. Unfortunately though only got 1 pull in and had to shut it down. Had enough blow by that the car started burning some oil.
Got it home tore the motor down, found the cause, purchased some custom JE pistons .02 over, had the block honed .02 over for the new pistons, just got everythint buttoned back up last night, assuming after some break in miles everything's mechanically sound I'll get it back on the dyno next week some time.

Planning on attending gridlife @ gingerman raceway first week of October if all goes as planned

Deleting the pcv return into the intake for a breather filter proved to be helpful in lowering my iat2 temps& with a good tune/tuner there aren't any ill effects
