Subject: Oil Leak from Top of Dipstick - Replace Intake Manifold Gasket - keywords Accel Acceleration CEL Crank Crankcase Dip Engine Excessive Hard High MIL P0171 PCV Pressure Repeat SES Stick WOT

Models:
2005-2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS
2004-2006 Saturn Ion Redline
with 2.0L Engine (VIN P - RPO LSJ)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

CONDITION/CONCERN:

On rare occasions, the engine oil dipstick may become unseated on hard acceleration, resulting in an engine oil leak. If the engine is operated long enough like this, a P0171 DTC could set due to the engine ingesting unmetered air.

This concern is the result of excessive crankcase pressure on hard acceleration. This crankcase pressure may be the result of an intake manifold gasket concern that allows supercharger boost pressure to bypass the intake manifold gasket where it seals around the PCV orifice, which is between the #2 and #3 intake runners.

RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS:

If the SI diagnostics do not isolate a cause for this concern, replace the intake manifold gasket using part number 12597855, which contains an updated sealing surface around the PCV orifice. This part number, or any future part number, is designed to address this concern.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

i know that i hate it when my dipstick pops out on its own

BlackyK Dec 1, 2006 04:44 PM

Didn't you just use a ziptie to keep ur stick under control? I think your idea is better than GM's. :)

yes but that is a band aid this is a fix :)
plus I am removing the IC soon for the dual pass anyhow so having the new gasket is a given!:twothumbs

This problem only started after the dealer removed my intake manifold for a repair. They must have screwed up my gasket somehow.

mugencivicsi Dec 1, 2006 07:19 PM

Duct Tape.......

it fixes everything....

eastcoastz Dec 1, 2006 07:26 PM

Too bad that updated PN will not register on any of the GM parts web sites.

p7x Dec 1, 2006 07:27 PM

gasket.....my whoe intake manifold was replaced b/c of this.

eastcoastz Dec 1, 2006 07:28 PM

SS SC Cobalt, I'm not sure, but I don't think you have to remove the manifold to replace the intercooler end plate.

Cobalt_Supercharged Dec 1, 2006 07:41 PM

Glad to hear that it is the manifold gasket and not broken ringlands or bad PCVs.

You have to remove the manifold to remove and reverse the flow of the cores. They are directional. plus it is extremely difficult to reach all the bolts due to the oil filter placement. Look here. https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/advanced-performance-modifications-130/dual-pass-intercooler-38126/

not bad PCV but I think its a good idea to modify the PCV for extensive modding.

Gaskets are on order and will be up on CED first part of next week.

Its nice to know GM is listening to us when we forward them some of our problems and are getting back to us with solutions.

I bought the new gasket and installed it when i took off my s/c last month. I honestly could not tell the difference between the two, other then the part number. I hope it really did change. I sure couldn't see it

Nate
