Big wing makes you slower?!?!?

So a freind and I were out yesterday toying around in our balts.

His is stage 2 w/ a 2.9 and a shaved trunk.

I'm 2.8 60's and exhaust with a stock wing.

From second gear I easily pull from him. 3rd gear is not so drastic but I still pull away.

But here is the surprise, In 4th gear he starts to creep up on me. We were scratching out heads and the only thing that made even a little sense was that I have the wing and at that speed I start to get a lot of drag.

What do you think?

Could be. I mean it does vibrate alot at higher speeds

It might be, it does cause wind resistance but i would think not till you get exessive of 100+ MPH would it make a difference.

You really don't know anything until you switch drivers. Do a couple pulls you in your car, him in his car, then switch and do a couple pulls with him in your car and you in his car. Eliminates the driver bias.

But I would agree with everyone else, since the difference is seen in 4th gear - that would indicate heatsoak to me.

Heatsoak - NO
Wing - NO

It is most likely good tune vs bad tune and one car can pull better in fourth due to less ECM drawbacks from things like knock and such.

I cannot belive the heatsoak answers............

dude there are ALOT of variables. Quality of gas in both vehicles, oil life/viscosity. NO car from the factory is the same.

Ok, that does seem a little wierd. You have cooling mods and smaller pulley and you are tuned, while he is just stage 2 with a 2.9

seems that it could be a number of things altogether. Like your wing may have a fraction of what it is, then your tune up top could affect it a little, and finally, what size rims does he have? Looks as though you have rims that are smaller than the factory 18's, if he is still on stock rims, that could affect it also. Think of it like gearing, smaller rims will spin faster making it harder to accelerate when at Higher speeds, and bigger rims are easier to spin once they are already turning. Of course that only makes sense at higher speeds as 18" wheels are not ideal for drag racing.

I would think so if I didn't easily pull in 2nd and then still pull in third.

I have stock wheels on now.

The only thing I can possibly think of that would change acceleration rates at higher speeds would be wind resistance.

Switch cars. Do it.

Then, switch trunks and do it!

just unbolt your wing and do it again, see what the outcome is.

listen, gosh its like teaching 2 year olds....

the wing does have drag on our cars. a vast majority of members that have topped out there cars will say this if they have had the wing, and then wingless. the max speed my buddy with an ion redline got when he had the wing was 145mph. when he took off the wing and had the small ion spoiler he got to 155mph.

at low speeds u wont notice but at higher speeds yes it does make a difference.

as far as factors or mods in this, he did this like in 1 day so same conditions. and the mods shouldnt matter if its a test like this. just if he changed anything else.

The wing, along with the rest of the body kit, aids in lowering the coefficient of drag on our cars? It does in theory help us at higher speeds to stay stable, much as the same as the wing on an STi or Evolution does. It does not produce enough drag to slow us down, nor does it product down force.

Regards,

Ryan

I can not believe you guys think that having a big wing will make a big difference as far as speed wise it does but very i mean very little

Correct to a point, a wing will slow down a car due to the downforce it does create. Top speed will be lowered, however it should keep the ass end down keeping it from "floating" or atleast feeling so. Although it does look a little goofy on the ass, it does provide some purpose.

Actually our 'wings' don't produce any downforce, they simply help to make the car 'slippery' through the air and stabilize them at higher speeds (to an extent).

Ryan

Somebody did the 1/4 with and without the wing a while back. He was two tenths faster without it. That thread is probably buried somewhere.
