Bolt's on pulley removal

:usa: I'm having difficulty even with an impact wrech of breaking the stage II bolt's loose to swap out a pulley. I know the bolt's have thread-lock from the kit on them but it isn't permanent type. Any suggestions?

Have you tried it with the belt still tensioned?

Everyone seems to be either having trouble getting the tensioner to compress or getting the bolts loose. My bolts were loose and the only trouble I had was compressing the tensioner, but after a few minutes of trying different size wrenches i figured it out.

The tensioner is not the problem, I can hold the pulley with large channel grips to hold the pulley and cannot break the bolt's loose. Even with a breaker wrench this still doesn't work.

WOOOOOOOO! someone else has my prob of a stupid dealer over-torquing the bots and using the stupid thread-lock.

chevypowered and i worked for almost 3 hours on my pulley. the first bolt came off just fine. the second bolt didnt quite come off..... so we moved on. the third bolt came off with quite a bit of force.

that left us with 2 bolts that were immovable. granted we weren't using the torx bit head, but we had a screw driver head wedged in nicely. (snapped 2 )

the suggestions i got:
-take the supercharger off and try to u can get some leverage. (BAH! we were moving the whole car torquing on it)

-drill out the bits (the last thing i want to do is f**k up my s/c snout)

-take it to a machine shop and have them drill it out (im too lazy)

here is how i got mine off. and i truely feel your frustraion:
*should require 2 ppl
1) get a dremel
2) get a reallllly thick screw driver head (mine was cut off from a 1 1/2 foot screwdriver). u can use a really good vice grip or plier to grasp it
3) dremel a nice big slit in the screw head. make sure it is deep, not too thick, and squared off on the edges
4) get someone to hold your OLD belt with a vice grip (or something of the sort)
5) TWIST THE LIVING HELL OUTTA THAT BOLT. it will eventually come. my whole car was swaying back and forth while i was wrenching on it. it works eventually.

elapsed time: almost 5 hours total.

i really hope that helps you out. if you have the torx bits, u shouldnt be having that much trouble

edit: and i plz no one make a sex joke out of that step by step

The kit does not come with any thrad locker. No where does GM even mention using any on the bolts in the instructions.

Do a search on my name for my previous threads on the damn bolts and dealer red loctiting them on.

You have to apply 500 degrees of heat to melt the red loctite before they will even begin to break loose and even then they may not. If you try and remove them without heat it takes approx 400 ft/lbs to break free red loctited bolts. Even after heating with a 1700 degree torch we still couldn't break our blue bolts free. Ive actually heard from a friend that our tech made them so they will not come off without being drilled out and now I believe him!

Its such a PITA im not even putting on the 2.85 pulley now.

that MT-2 Bit that they give u in the package... Yeah well long story short the F-ing bolts were so dam tight we SNAPED the Bit in 2 mean while stripping the shit out of the bolt that we were using it on. i tried regular wrench with the MT-2 and a Air wrench and Snapped it with the Breaker bar boltz didnt even budge...
does any 1 kno where i can get a replica bit from gm said the only way that i can get a new 1 is by buying the stage 2 kit again and thats BS and they are saying they cant even get the bit for there garage witch is BS too sence its a GM PART...

The tensioner is a fucking bitch , either use a 15 MM wrench or vice grips good luck that shit almost made me want to sell my car , i highly suggest buying an adjustable tensioner

codyss Oct 11, 2007 09:27 AM

I made a wrench to fit my tensioner, I belive I started with a 9/16 and filed it until it fit perfectly. Then I curved it so I could move the tensioner with ease.

wow mine only took like 1 minute to take off, total time for me= 5 min
