E-Brake Cable Flies off!!

So as Im driving 70mph on the Freeway, I'm cruising and suddenly I hear a loud POP. I thought it was a blow out at first, so i start to merge to the shoulder. When I see that all four tires are still holding air, I start to take a look under the car. I see a cable draging. I don't know how the hell it fell off, but it fell off, tire caught it slapped it against the bottom and put a little cable dent on it. Took it to the dealer on a flat bed, (GM roadside assistance) and they claim i ran over a brick or a big rock. That is the biggest lie I have ever heard. They could have done better than that. A rock can bring down a cable? not unless it's anchored to the floor with a hook to pull it out. The dealer was Allen Gwynn in Glendale California. After arguing with a bunch of un-educated managers and "Specialists" I took my car and left.

Has anyone else any other issues? They say that this has never happened before but theres always a first for everything.

I did search and found other threads where the hand brake failed and the dude's car rolled in to the ditch.

Allen Gwyn Chevrolet:cussing:

I havint had any problems yet (cross fingers) but ive read alot on here that if you have problems with the dealer to try another one that maby they will want to help you more than to make up crap like "oh thats your fault for hitting that big ass rock in the road" what a load of bs. Good luck.

I hate going to dealers where the name sounds retarded. I bought my car at Salisbury Chevrolet... salisbury steak is pretty good... Allen Gwyn? yucky poo poos!

I took mine to Dartmouth Motors to get my clutch replaced, never asked any questions about it, and they realigned the shifter cables on the B+M that was already installed. They treated me right.

My E-brake actualy wasn't working right when i bought my car.. Felt like it did nothing. My car 07 SS, Picked it up on the 22nd of Dec, So anyways took it into the dealer and they said the ebrake on the rear brakes was installed backwards :cussing: So they fixed it...

thats an odd thing to happen. that dealer is absolutely ridiculous if they think you are going to just say "ok" to hitting a rock or brick on the freeway.

the e-brakes on these cars are pretty lame. the story you already mentioned and some others i have read point towards the e-brake being defective. i dont know if anyone has noticed, but compared to other cars, the e-brake barely locks up when u pull it on the street.

couple weeks ago i was playing in an iced over parking lot and pulling the e-brake. after i was done, my ebrake had 1-2 inches of play before it clicked. lousy . im going to the dealer to get it fixed under waranty (probably just tightening the cable)

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to go to another dealer to see if they can help. I actually got a chance to put the car on ramps and check out the bottom. Here is my conclusion.

The black clip which holds the e-brake cable did not appear to be ripped out, nor did it have any damage on it. If the cable was ripped out by something on the ground, the force should have shown stress marks on the plastic or at least broken. It's in top notch shape. It seems that the black support clip un-clipped. Being at freeway speeds, the drag form the wind pulled the cable down. When it was low enough, the tire ran over it (like a jump rope and ripped it out so hard, it wipped the body and thats what put the dent on the bottom. After matching the cable to the dent, it's plainly obvious that this infact was the cause. I've never seen a rock in the chape of a pen to put a dent on the body abot 1/4" deep. The plastic sleeve on the cable is broken. Where I took that and put it on the bottom of the tire, Perfect match!! The tire did catch it and ripped it right out.

According to the dealer, The rock was massive to break off the cable. I tried to explain that if the rock was that massive, it should have hit the front air dam below the radiator and broken off that plastic. I don't know how t post pics but I got some I can E-mail to anyone who wants to put them up.

hmmmm. a rock would not snap a cable like that.

to post pics (so others dont have to do it for you in the future):
-host the image online. there are a few different places (including here). imageshack.us is a good one

-after you host it, right click the image and copy the full address. i.e. http://www.imagename.img . imageshack can offer you different copy paste options with and explaination

-paste the url of the image in your post and surround with image tags
i.e. [IMG]image url[/IMG]

;)
