Gauging Intrest: Cobalt SS ice box

I have recently been talking with a well known company that would like to make a coolant/dry ice reservoir for the cobalt SS. it would mount where the option b tank goes. It would be Cobalt ss specific. I know the Bwoody already makes one for the ION redline but not for the cobalt. Looking at the prices of their other ice boxes, it should be considerably cheaper than bwoodys. anyone?

Cool???

I though you were talking about for like beer :twothumbs

my only question is how long does this last? is it something that needs refilling all the time?

no...its a reservoir just like option B tank. however you now have the option putting dry ice into the box to help cool the coolant as it passes through the box. Dry ice is not required. and can be added anytime you like.

that would be bad ass! seroulsly... I want it. est. cost?

not sure yet...but looking at their other boxes. i would say around $200.00:twothumbs

widebody_balt_ss Apr 12, 2008 12:14 AM

this would not be a tru option b however? Correct?

Its option KA! (kick ass) it will work just like the option b tank, however, dissipate heat faster and be able to store dry ice. ...:twothumbs

probally a dumb question but why does it matter if i use the car as a commuter or not

Raven SS Apr 12, 2008 12:25 AM

cuz then ur not dropping pulleys and causing it to overheat needing this

the ice box doesnt work like the option b surge tank, it works more like a heat exchanger.basicly the ice box works like a beer cooler for a keg, you have a box with a coiled copper tube and fill the box with ice. when you run the coolant (or beer) through that copper pipe the ice chills the coolant down significantly. the ice does not actualy mix with the coolant. the purpose of it is to chill the charge temps much lower than a heat exchanger, i know on turbo cars you can see well below ambient.

an ice box is only really good for a race car, or something you run at the track lots. a drag only car id only run an ice box, on a drag/street car id run a stock heat exchanger and keep the ice box filled with water on the street and ice at the dragstrip. if you autocross or run track days, an icebox is pointless.

why is it pointless if you run autocross or track days? and i didnt know wanting cooler IAT's was pointless....hmmm. sure, its ideal for running at the drag strip, but it sill betters your IAT'2. if you think thats pointless, then i guess every cooling mod is...:thumbsdow

and as far as the ice box not working like the option b tank. we are going to try and make it with an air bleed line to bleed the air from the system. However it will be run inline with your heat exchanger.

Sharkey Apr 12, 2008 02:24 PM

im not saying its pointless overall, it just has its places. autocross is a fine line, basicly it depends on the size of the track and how long your on the coarse for. were i have autocrossed we run 3-5 runs back to back for each group, by the time you sit in staging and wait for the next run, run again, wait, ect your ice will melt very quick. for a road coarse is pointless as if your out there for 20 laps the ice has all melted and the ice box is not efective for cooling, its essentially added weights. in this case a nice big heat exchanger is the best thing to have, hence the grand am cup cars running that big griffin dual pass heat exchanger.

its ideal for drag racing because you load up the box with ice, idle it down to staging, your on the throttle in boost for under 14 seconds, coast down and idle it to the pits, you should get a few runs with one load of ice.

and as far as incorperating a surge tank and bleed hose, good idea.

Ice box experiment, did that: 150 lbs of weight for 5 minutes of run time, power gain not overwelming as its just cooling...nos is better lighter easier

07cobaltss Apr 12, 2008 05:30 PM

why wouldnt that work in place of the option b coolant tank?

nvm i think i see the issue. our would have to be smaller due to the windsheild wiper flulid fill neck being on the other side...i personaly would love this

150lbs of weight? its a little box...20lbs max..

it goes where the option b tank goes

07cobaltss Apr 12, 2008 05:34 PM

yeah i know, but i was curious as to why the ion red line one would not work.

Raven SS Apr 12, 2008 05:37 PM

oic..

their engine bay is slightly different from ours.

wtf? 150lbs? you=fail! its just cooling? you=fail! NOS is different. unless you're talking about spraying the front mount. its cooling..thats the whole point of this!

is this still goin on im interested?
