Please only post FAQs (conclusive information) about the kits. Provide supportive material and documentation if you can for each bit of information you contrubite. This is not a thread to ask questions. Any posts other than information will be deleted. Hopefully this will help. Thanks everybody! |
Stage Kit FAQ: Submitted by c7015
- Part Numbers are - Stage 1 – 17801947 - Stage 2 – 17803229 - Stage 1-2 – 17803230 -The kit will not void your warranty if installed by your dealer Kit consists of -Stage one – Reflash and Injectors -Stage two – 3” Pulley smaller belt & everything in Stage 1 https://www.cobaltss.net/gallery/fil...3229_large.jpg -Both kits contain the same ECM Re-flash - No Badging is included in the kit - Instructions are provided https://www.cobaltss.net/gallery/fil...tionspage1.jpg - You may have the install done from an outside shop and flashed with the author code by GM (warranty may not apply if installed by an outside shop – if part failure is found to be a direct result of how the parts were installed) -Stage 2 Kit has been Proven to get rid of lean CEL -Cost varies dealer to dealer however install time should be roughly 1.5 hours -Stage Redline is adjusted to 7000 RPM https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/atta...2&d=1144281593 https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/atta...3&d=1144281593 __________________ |
The lean code P0171 hasn't popped up yet so we'll see.
The redline in the first 3 gears is 7000 RPM as I still have my winter tires on and haven't got that high yet:lol: The stumbling idle when blipping the throttle at a stop is gone. The idle is raised slightly to about 875 RPM. Car feels more tuned but still has the feel that we fell in love with. Will bring lots of smiles:) |
First gear has been proven already with a Tech2 scan.
2nd/3rd/4th/5th gears have not. Can someone please verify this also with a tech2? I was told otherwise and that 1st gear was only changed due to less engine load. |
im gonna say its fun all the way around..i saw on another thread that when in low rpm and u step on it..boost automatically goes to 12.5 and higher rpm goes to like 15/16...i cant wait for mine!!

Trying to help you guys out here. Lets stick to just submitting information :thumb:
Example: Q: What is the pulley size for stage 2? A: 3" |
Is the reflash available with out purchasing the entire kit. I'm sure alot of us have already changed out the pulley and the injectors. If so how do we go about doing it?

Q:Is the reflash available without getting the stage kits? A: NO, an authorization number is on the instruction manual that is needed by the GM tech doing the reflash to allow him to get the proper reflash part number loaded into the tech 2. Available flash part numbers are: 12607644 05 Cobalt SS 12607645 06 Cobalt SS 12607646 04 Ion RL 12607647 05 Ion RL 12607648 06 Ion RL |
With the 3.0 pulley (GM) can we go smaller than that, without changing the hub or snout?
|
If you want to add this info too
Q. What are the Injector Sizes A. The injectors are 5.3 gms/sec flow. (Roughly 42 lbs/hr) Q.How much bigger are the injectors A.The stock injectors are 4.3 gms/sec. . Stock injectors are about 34 lbs/hr Q. How will Stage kits effect fuel economy A. We dont know conclusivly however it is safe to assume that the larger injectors will decrease MPG slightly the rest is up to the driver |

Here are a couple of questions I have...
1)How long did the dealer work on your upgrade. (My dealership is saying something like over 4 hrs for the stage 2, which I dont think is right) 2)What kinda of MPG are you guys looking at currently at with the stage 2 upgrade. |

Stage 2 Individeal Part Numbers
Smaller Belt: 12597993 High Flow Injectors 12597995 These numbers do not show up on gmpartsdirect.com. The Hub assembly does not have any parts numbers on it. |

Dealer install on stage 2 appears to be between 2.5-3 hours. It takes awhile on the phone to get the VCI or whatever its called. Mine took 3 hours (tech took it for a drive in that time too). I have put ~250 miles on my stage 2 kit. The whole tank of gas I averaged 23 mpg. When I reset it on the highway I was getting ~30mpg and of course I have put the hammer down in that time too....... |
with Stage 2.. if we went down to a smaller pulley (such as 2.9 for ex.) would we still have to run the boost bypass mod?
|
I believe that is correct....but i could be wrong....!

The injectors seem like they arnt a big deal if you just count the fasteners, BUT you DO need to do a few additional steps to do it safely (battery disconnect) and keep from leaking fuel all over your engine and wiring harnesses. Then a reflash typically takes .4-.5 at the best of times but it's taking a LOT longer on the Stage kits as you gotta phone 1-800-Techline (and usually wait on hold for 10) just to get the VCI code to install the software. Then afterwards you need to warm the engine to operating temperature, do a crankshaft variation relearn and road test to get the fuel trims moving in the right direction (they get reset during a reflash) The pulley is totally a hit and miss. Maybe if GMPP would have issued a proper puller/installer to the dealers that could eliminate having to pull the supercharger, the 1.5 time allowance would be more realistic. (trust me they dont have one) So instead they are being advised to remove the supercharger completly and "rig" something up on the grubby old 20-ton press to remove and install the pulley.I can forsee all sorts of pulley damage and various pulley/sc problems at some dealers. I've also heard of at least one case of the SC bolts being stripped out from over-tightening with an air tool (again all because at that point the techncian is taking shortcuts as he's working on his own time for free at that point) Total BS! Partec reps are gonna get an earful!! WopOnTour EDIT>OOPS Sorry Marc, just realized this was an FAQ thread. Feel free to move my post- Wop |

Wop ohhh ok. Understandable. If we were to bring one in for them to use.. would they use it? |

WopOnTour, you said it right in your post,#24. I did use the press for removing my pulley with out a problem, but that's not to say no other Techs would. So, my contrabution to this thread is this:
I recieved many PMs about installation and warranty, my advise; Go to your dealer and ask them IF they have a problem with installing this kit for you, ask them about warranty, ask them WHO will do the install! If they have a problem with any one of these three questions or you do not like the answers, walk away. The reason I say this is, you deserve to have a Tech that "Knows and Cares" about what they are doing on your car. I know this may be hard to find, but it is worth the effort. I, personally, have advised my Parts Dept. and Writers, that I wish to meet and speak to anyone that comes in with questions about these kits or any other matter in referance to Cobalt performance parts and installation. I just want all of those looking to have these kits installed, to look at more than just price. |
If im going to put a 2.8 pulley on it is it worth even buying stage 2?

hey what is the GM Employee discount on the stage 1
|
What is the canadian cost of the Stage 2 (including labour)? Have any of the Canadian guys installed the Stage 2?
|
hey guys...just to let you know that i'm from canada and my dealer have only the part number for the stage 1 and 1 to 2... the 17803229 doesnt exist int their computer so they will order me the 2 stage kit separatly and they sell it to me 1500$(Can) installed and tax included...not so bad i think...
|
Seems like a good price... where is your dealer located.
|
I talked to my dealer about how much it would cost me. Going by stock replacement time they said it would take 1.5 for the injectors, probally an hour for the pulley and belt, god knows how long for the reflash. With the cost of the upgrade rough $1000.00 (parts 637.50 and estimated 4 hours of labor). I'm not quite sure if I want to the upgrade or not now.

Q: I have stage II installed....well a 3.0 ZZP pulley w/ tensioner and stage 1 ....ever since stage one when shifting my clutch falls on it's face....i have 7k and dont typically beat on my clutch so what gives?
