Has anyone used the zzp timing chain kit??

I just did the install of the zzp timing kit and didn't use the two shims that were supplied. The installation instructions and service manual both did not include then in the steps, and I didn't have the shims on the car before. I don't really feel like tearing down the car again to put the two paper width shims on between the crank and balance sprockets, but zzp seems to say it's needed. My question is: has anyone else left these off? And if so, have you had any issues?

First I have heard of these shims. Definitely didn't use any shims when I installed my timing chain kit though it was OEM Cloyes. Do you mean between the water pump/balance shaft and timing chain sprockets, both on the crank?

Only reason I can see for that being a requirement is if the sprocket thickness isn't quite right in the kit ZZP provides. The kit I bought should be identical to stock and stock didn't have a shim so no reason to use a shim when replacing with identical parts.

the shims are for the vvt engines the cam gears are a few thousands farther out then the non vvt engines so they space the lower cam gear out so the chain lines up

Good to know. Assuming hopewillfall does actually have an LSJ than he/she should leave these shims out. It's weird that ZZP would include the shims with the LSJ kit because they surely have a separate kit for the VVT Ecotecs as they require the VVT cam gears as well.
