Having heck of a time with B&M shifter

I took off today to attempt to put a B&M short throw shifter in my 05 SS/SC. So far 3 hours later and many swear words. I cannot get the shift knob off, Have virtually no idea what a couple of the parts that get re-used look like(my instructions are extremely poor quality) I have sat here reading and printing out different threads on "how to" for the shifter knob. I have the cover off and there is a rubber piece on it with nothing under it. After(if I get it off) which pieces do I keep to re-use ? There is no how to with pics on this either. Bummer. My ride is parked outside and will probably be getting sent off to the Chevy dealer to re-install the stocker(if I have not damaged it). Totally frustrated. Ideas anyone ? I could drill and run a screw in if I knew it will not ruin the thing if I have to get it picked up by Chev. Thanks ahead,

The stock shift knob looks great but is designed by morons.

It is pressed on so you either need to pull on it really hard or drill a hole tap it a nd press it off by screwing a bolt into the tapped hole.

take the silver plastic piece off the top of the shift knob that has the gear pattern on it and remove the allen bolt underneath. take a small flathead and stick it up under the shiftknob, lay the body of the shifter assembly on the floor and put your foot on it, then bang the screwdriver with a hammer a few times, the knob should come off. you are going to re-use the bushing for the reverse pivot and the weird thing that surrounds the main ball pivot of the shift knob. that's pretty much all i can remember off the top of my head.

Knob Off, check

Got the knob off, Now I finally have the boot off too. What goes next ? What do I save / what do I discard(so to speak)
Thanks

the instructions are rather detailed minus the removing the stock knob issue, too k 2 hours, and throwing it at the ground about 30 times to get it off

Taking for quick test drive. I marked the cables as written . they do match up , but not running the shifting is extremely snug(yes I greased it up too).
Back in 10 minutes.

Can you explain where you mark the cables and how they get realigned?

I'm gonna install my B&M after work today. I've only glimpsed at the instructions.

You mark them where on the end of the clips where the cable goes into them.

is shifting effort greatly increased? i had a b & m short shifter on my maxima and its difficult to get it into 1st gear and reverse, i usually have to double clutch it to get it into gear. after that I have been reluctent to get one for the cobalt

your linkage may have just been off a bit on your maxima, it should shift smoothly.
