How much can the Head handle?

I'm going Turbo and I'm going to buy an extra head and build that for cheap =). But I was just wondering what are the limits on the stock head?

Blown 4-banger Nov 13, 2006 10:33 PM

Well from what I've heard its the same head used on 1400 hp drag cobalts. Now its ported and polished and what not, but its still the same basic head.

SwizzDSMSS Nov 13, 2006 10:51 PM

Cool cause I was going to port and polish it with the stage 3 cams and valves.

how high do you want to reach swizz

NJHK Nov 14, 2006 12:06 AM

You should be fine with whatever you plan you're aiming for.

Malaclypse Nov 14, 2006 12:34 AM

ARP Headstuds. MLS or copper head gaskets. Possibly O-ring the block.

Enough said.

SwizzDSMSS Nov 14, 2006 07:02 PM

500whp with a Hahn Super 20G. I think I should be fine with that. Plus I got 2 heads now incase one goes! haha gotta be prepared.

Blown 4-banger Nov 14, 2006 07:17 PM

wow someones rich
If I had the money (which I don't) I would merge 2 LSJ motors into a 4 liter V8. The heads are some of the most efficient heads I've ever seen. Then I'd DUAL twin screw SC it!!!

SwizzDSMSS Nov 14, 2006 07:27 PM

Not rich at all. I just manage my money really well. haha.

Rodimus_Prime Nov 15, 2006 03:53 PM

This is something ive wondered as well, ive looked at a HP tuners file from a stock 06 SS and it looks like you can tune fuel and spark right up to 8192RPM which is the limit in HP tuners, I run 7000rpm currently on a 2002 Supercharged Ecotec Cavalier (stock redline is 6500) with no issues at all, gm runs 7000 on thier stage 2 cobalt kits so its safe to say it should be ok till 7500 possibly more, I would think the LSJ head is better and has stronger valves than a regular L61

The front engine for the front wheels. Then have a custom axle made so that the rear engine can power the rear wheels. 4wd baby. If you did something like that though...you would have to have the same mods on each engine....bc if not, one would be faster than the other and will slow you down.

Edit: But then you'd need a fully custom trans, axles, you would have to wire up the gas pedal to power both engines, feed some lines of gas from the gas tank to the rear engine, etc. It's possible though....at least I think it would be, if money weren't an issue lol

Is it even possible to have two engines turning both front wheels? ..... well if you had enough money to put two engines in, might as well make it rear wheel drive

Beautiful!!!

chevytech Nov 16, 2006 08:55 PM

i dont know if anyone makes valve springs yet but i would have to suggest replacing them for a 500hp build being that they will float the valves @8k (according to gm in a class i recently took.) of course this is on stock cams i have no idea at what rpm you would experience valve float on jpb stage 3 cams. but if you have 2 heads why dont you find out for us ;) course the second head wont help your valves or pistons much:)

SwizzDSMSS Nov 17, 2006 01:13 AM

haha I know but I dont want to be the one to find out. Plus I donthave my turbo kit yet.

Agreed, with ARP head studs, and a Cometic MLS, or SCE copper head gasket, you will have no worries.

We carry the complete Ferrea Racing valve train for the Ecotec. Dual springs, Spring steps, Titanium retainers, race valves, and to benifit Comp Cams. :cssNET:

the Lsj are stronger valves but at the same time Hahn turbo on the solstice 2.4 are runnin stock valves which are the same valves for the 2.4 cobalts

Rodimus_Prime Nov 17, 2006 01:06 PM

so any real problems going to 7500?

Halfcent Nov 17, 2006 03:30 PM

There is a lot of old ground being covered here. I have moved this out of the Advanced section.

Separately, the head itself is in fact the least of your concerns in a 500 HP build. The information concerning a new gasket and studs is correct. However, you will need to pay more attention to your rotating assembly then you do the head. You will need new rods and pistons. Not even the LSJ's forged internals were meant for anything more then 300 HP.
