How to remove GM security bolts?
Kay, I've got a blower with the GM security bolts installed on a 2.79" pulley. I'm trying to swap the pulley out for a 3" but I've never seen a bit this shape in my life.
I'm assuming some type of tool comes with these bolts but I don't have it so...what is it and where can I pick the bit up locally? |
at the auto parts store is where i got mine
|
if you have the blue gm security bolts you wont find a tool anywhere. I work at an auto parts store and checked everywhere and no one has one. The bit is call a phillips morotrq number 2 bit. I have to contact the phillips screw company and they had to send me one.

In all the years the stage kit's have been out no one has found a place to get the same exact security bit that comes in the kit's. If you got one at a local parts store please let us know which one . The marking's on the bit is MT-2 and i can only describe it as a twisted star .
Ehhhh what ^ said. |
SOB I should have known...
that is pretty retarded. I guess its a long shot but anybody have one they dont need anymore? |
I have two of them. one is a 3/8" ratchet drive and the other looks like a 3/8" wrench will fit on it. Pay for shipping and the 3/8" one is yours. Let me find them and confirm I have it. PM me tomorrow.
EDIT: Just found it. Its in my hands right now. PM me your shipping info and i'll get you a quote if you are interested. |

It's cool someone found the source of these blue bitches......and the bit that fit's them. Id be surprised to find a bit in a parts store thou.

SnapOn sells Mortorq bits, so do several other tool companies. Its not hard to find, Its just not something youll find at HomeDepot
The Pulleey uses an MT2 I believe, Ive also got MT4 because they use them on the bellhousing of auto trans' now. |

I had the bit and it shattered into 4 pieces, and the bolts had no loc tite, best way is to get a 3/8 drill bit and drill the head of the bolt, it will fall right off. Pm me if you have any questions.

A good sharp chisel works well too.

yeah I don't know if I wanna destroy them...I just want to get them off lol
then I can sell them with the 2.79 pulley :thumb: |
The "security bolt" is not a security bolt. It is a Mortorq bolt desinged by the Phillips Screw Company. The Mortorq bolt was designed for the aircraft industry to be able to design a small headed bolt that can have a lot of torque applied to instal and to remove with out damaging the fastener. The bolt is a Mortorq size #2 or MT-2. You can read more about the Mortorq design here:
http://www.phillips-screw.com/aero_mortorq.htm Two MT-2 bits were provided with every LSJ stage kit sold. If you don't have an MT-2 bit you can purchase a bit here: http://apexdistributor.com/index.php...d&productId=85 |
use a power drill and chuk the drill directly on the bolt. thats how you also get out things you strip..
have fun |
Nice to know.

I got mine at autozone, it came in a "Security Bit Kit" or "Utility Bit Kit" I forgot what they called it but it came with probably 60 bits or so. It was in a small blue plastic box with latches on the tool aisle. I believe it is made by Greatneck and has a yellow jacket over it. Thats about as specific as I can be lol.
The only problem with mine is after I got it and tried to undo it I realized they put F'n loctite.. |
