Idle problem CURE!!!!!!!! Finally!!

Ok, I have been one of the thousands of victims of the horendous idle problem with my 07' Cobalt SS Supercharged. I do have many mods including the Stage 2 upgrade along with the K+N Typhoon Cold Air intake system and exhaust and many more. I noticed shortly after installing the Stage 2 kit that my cars idle was bouncing at idle and the problem got worse and worse to the point whereas I was stalling in traffic. I was forced to basically ride my clutch like nobodys business and it was just plain annoying. Pulling up to a red light and people looking at me thinking I was a young 16 year old wanting to show my ride up cause my rpm was consistentally bouncing from 400-1400. My fuel mileage has progressively gotten worse and it had started to become a safety issue considering I was almost t-boned as I rolled through a downhill stop sign trying to beat traffic but my car stalled again!!!

Anyhow, I am aware that there are many other balt owners out there who are experiencing the same problem as myself and I have seen what others were trying to do to fix this god aweful problem with no prevail. I have been working with the head GM tech in my city here for a while now to see if we could finally put this issue to rest. After months and months of monkeying around and ruling almost everything out except for a possible computer error in the car that wasnt tripping any codes which would be unlikely I thought to remove my throttle body to have a look. Just for the record all of you cobalt owners this is soo simply a blind monkey can remove the throttle body. Simply remove your intake and the throttle body is attached with 4-10mm bolts and 1-Vacuum line and 1-Electrical connector. Once removed I noticed that I had a bit of gunk in the body(not a significant amount and keep in mind my car have only 5k miles on it) but I figured I would give it a good cleaning with a $5 spray can of throttle body cleaner and then clean right around the valve(keep in mind when you open the valve be very gentle when cleaning to avoid any unwanted strain or possible damage). Once this minor operation was finished I reinstalled everything back to normal and fired it up and HOT DAMN!!!! Back to normal baby! Everything is running 100%. No more funky butterfly idle problems and my gas mileage is back to normal.

I cant believe I didnt figure this out long ago but s**t happens I guess. Anyhow, I know many of you are going to be wanting to jump all over this and fix your own problem but read this before you do. I dont like just fixing problems and saying "great its done" I want to know what caused this considering the car is so new with so few miles on it??? Im not 100% sure but I would assume it has alot to do with the filter being mounted so close to the ground and possibly some oil from the K+N filter and mabye some other debris happen to make its way up which would be strang but no impossible. My only possible solution to this rather than doing this cleaning every 5k miles would be for all of us to install oil catch tanks to allow some of this crud to remove itself from the intake and then every once in a while remove the vacuum line on your intake while the car is running and give the hole in the intake a quick spray of the throttle body cleaner.

Ohh and for you wanting to know why this problem was doing what it was doing is simply this - when there is any type of crud or oily compound around your intake valve and the valve may possibly stick a bit the vehicle recognized this and sees that it is sticking so it rushes to correct and overcorrects causing the valve to be opened to much and drops quickly causing the fluctuation from anywhere from a couple hundred rpm to 1500 rpm or so. I hope to god that this helps hundreds if not thousands of other owners out there who have been experiencing this problem because it drives us CRAZY!!! and I was near ready to go buy a gallon of gas and a match if a solution didnt come along right soon. Anyhow, please post replies once this is tried and let me know. I am very very curious as to how many people this is going to help.

craigk_c19 06-07-2008 01:24 PM

bumb for those of yall that need to do this

Joeyavhu 06-07-2008 01:27 PM

Hmm... This may be worth a shot when I stick the TB Spacer in there. Thanks.

Navarch 06-07-2008 01:30 PM

Damn..... I'm gonna have to give this a try. This idle problem has been getting on my nerves for some time now. If this works, you deserve a medal for this thread!!!

craigk_c19 06-07-2008 01:31 PM

hope it works for yall

Turbo06Sedan 06-07-2008 02:27 PM

im going to have to look into this on my 2.4, but its quite odd..my rpm's flutter (300-600rpm difference) when cruising with cruise control on.

RedEcotecSS 06-07-2008 03:17 PM

mine only does it when the A/C is on. think it'd be the same problem?

Angel 06-07-2008 05:52 PM

Guys, if you are having an idle problem this would be the first thing to check. I almost promise that you will love the results and as far as anyone thinking that this is a tough job..Its not. If anything you should have this done within an hour. Good luck and keep me posted.

Have you picked up your TB spacer yet? If so then would you mind on telling me how to get one. Thanks.

Yep, at idle when my AC is on no matter if its on 1,2,3 or 4 my rpm's jump around from 600rpm- 1300rpm... its absolutely ridiculous so I don't even use my AC anymore. I'm def gonna check the TB but I think there is something else at play for when the AC is on...

oh and thanks for lettin everyone know :twothumbs

cblt12 06-07-2008 07:40 PM

dude im going to autozone right now... this has been pissing me off so bad i almost want to hump your leg right now. it has been horrible lately and dies all the time! i love you.

JCswoosher2 06-07-2008 07:46 PM

cblt12 06-07-2008 08:29 PM

plaxton 06-07-2008 08:33 PM

sweet. i will try this on my next days off.

kenhebe 06-07-2008 09:02 PM

I hate to admit that I didn't think of this being that I run a shop, but I have about 34000 miles on my car and when I took my throttle body off, it was as black as can be. Cleaned it out and the idle issue seems to be gone.

Dead Zen 06-07-2008 09:13 PM

hmmmmmmm. oil buildup on the throttle body??? maybe we all need to bypass the pcv hose type thingy that goes into our intake

red06s/c 06-07-2008 09:22 PM

Humm ill try this to...i thought it was a weather issue. When its cold ( live in ohio) its REALLY bad! Now its warm and it still does it but not as bad. i just has my s/c off yesterday and i did see some nasty in there, and i didnt even think bout cleaning it. I know shoot me!

Hockeyman 06-07-2008 11:08 PM

would this prevent missfires at idle? My RPMs don't bounce but every 20 seconds my engine will misfire for about 10 seconds.

Im almost 100% sure this will correct your problem. Seems you are having the similar problem as me. Good luck and let me know what happens.

djblass 06-08-2008 01:41 AM

got the same problem but only when the a/c is on, going to take the car in this week i think its the clutch compressor

djblass 06-08-2008 04:12 AM

this is a bit of what my car sounds like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPZI3Xxjsts

AzulitoAlero 06-08-2008 10:35 PM

yeh having the TB serviced is PART OF YOUR REGULAR CAR MAINTENANCE, GUYS!! You should do it whenever you change spark plugs, at the very least. I do mine every few oil changes. Clean or replace the air filter at the same time, it cant hurt... and a TB service at a shop will only run you 15-25 bucks. Its soooo easy though.. Easy to remove, then just hit it with some TB cleaner. voil-ah! =)

This reminds me though.. i need to do it soon on my newest car.

djblass 06-08-2008 10:41 PM

well have you checked my video that doesn't sound like its the TB but i will clean it anywayz

CobaltVenomSS 06-09-2008 01:16 AM

I honestly doubt it. Bunch of monkey that work down there. When I told them how I fixed my problem they were like "already with only 5k miles on it????" as if this was something new to them. I would make sure to have them check into this asap to make sure.

CobaltVenomSS 06-09-2008 06:14 PM

if it still does it when i pick it up tomorrow..ill just do it myself

Altiery54 06-10-2008 09:33 AM

i will be doing this once the TB spacer goes on

umrdyldo 06-10-2008 09:34 AM

This is not really that true.

I have a 2.2 fully bolted. I had the problem with a clean 2.2TB, a dirty 2.2TB, and a clean 2.4TB.

Mine happens the most when the car coolant is very warm.

I tuned the fans a little more aggresive and that has helped a lot, but not fixed it.

FunkyStickman 06-10-2008 09:36 AM

I had the same problem, and the car was throwing codes all the time... the dealer (shudder) thought it was the MAP sensor, but all I did was put in a new air filter and cleaned the throttle body, and Bingo! Problem gone.

Int0x 06-10-2008 09:41 AM

Hopefully this solves my problem too, thanks for the info :cssNET:

Edubs 06-10-2008 09:48 AM

I always assumed that this problem was because of my cams and just having a rough time tuning them. I'll try this tonight and see what it does for me.

My current fix has been to ride in 2nd gear as close to stopping w/o stalling as I could and then pressing in the clutch and jabbing the throttle while stopping before the RPM's came down to my 900rpm idle...

umrdyldo 06-10-2008 09:58 AM

^^^ agreed

I blip the throttle right before it freaks out and it doesn't happen as badly

This is so exciting. I didn't know anyone else had this issue...

umrdyldo 06-10-2008 10:08 AM

i am almost sure without a doubt that it's not a clean TB that is the problem.

I put a brand new one on it still flips out. Hell mine flipped out new and stock.

Adding CAI and stuff didn't change anything.

My next thought is, how many automatics does it do it on.

Xenozx 06-10-2008 10:10 AM

Well I kinda have this problem. The problem only happens when I turn on my A/C, and only when I am stopped. Like, I can drive arround w/ A/C off and never have this problem, but if I turn the A/C on and come to a redlight, or a drive through my rpms will start to bounce arround from 400-1500, and if I give it some gas it will stop, but shortly after start again. If I sit too long, if I try to pull off it will just stall, and then the car wont start up right way, I have to wait like 1-2 minutes.

Do you think this is a similar issue?

originaladrian 06-10-2008 05:38 PM

alright, this thread deserves a bump.

I cleaned my TB and my idle smoothed out allot.

That thing was really oily...

before at idle i would be about 1k now its ALMOST an even 800

DoMiStIc_RuSh_06 06-10-2008 06:44 PM

So would a catch tank help or even prevent this????

scampbell 06-12-2008 04:24 PM

Thanks for this man it fixed my fluttering idle especially with the a/c on god that was gettin on my nerves it would drop all the way down to 450-500 rpm when i was comin up on a stop light. Now its perfectly smooth. I did have kind of a scare though when i was takin off the throttle body it slipped out of my hand and was hanging by only the wire harness. Well after I cleaned it and installed it back in the car, i went to start it and all the car would not even try to start... I was pretty sure it had to do with the force of the throttle body pulling down on the wire harness so i went back under the hood and pushed on all the wires on the clip back in and she fired right up. Then i started driving down my driveway and my CEL comes on so I was pretty pissed about that... When I got my scan tool out there were three codes, all of which had to do with the TB so im guessin when I pushed those wires back in they set off the codes because i cleared them and they havent come back. Anyway, thanks again for the great info about cleaning the TB.
