Making my own exhaust!

I want to run 3.00" exhaust piping, I already bought a HP resonator! Now does anyone know what size of muffler I should buy... I am going to reuse the stock tip, but buy either a Dynomax SuperTurbo or UltraFLO muffler, oval muffler but don't know what size I should get if anyone has done these please let me know!

Good question. I just finished my 3" dp, and going to do the rest. I picked up some 3" resonators(no brand name) and going to do a magnaflow xl turbo muffler. Y? not sure, but they are well priced, and are suppose to be good performance and not super loud. The stock muffler measures 10x20 , but has a section that is actually 14" wide (ya, it goes from 10" wide to 14" wide by 20" long). I m planning on going for a 4x9 or 6x9 oval w/ 3" in/out and using stock tip aswell.

But would love to hear of what others have used for mufflers etc too!

Here's a link to another member's custom exhaust. I will be doing a custom exhaust myself soon and am looking at mufflers. I haven't even looked under the car yet, but I believe you can do any muffler you want (center, side, etc.). The only thing w/ using the stock tip is that it is a 2.5" dia., so you will have to reduce the piping before you get to the muffler. I wanted to do the same thing too, because I like our stock tips better than the aftermarket ones, especially the GM ones, although I've heard that they fill the hole in the bumper better. If you end up finishing this, make sure you post some pics and/or sound clips for those of us doing custom exhausts. I too am concerned about a custom exhaust being too loud. I don't want to wake up the neighborhood, just get a little deeper sound and a few hp out of it.

Talk to Blown 4-banger. He has a custom 3" with Magnaflow Resonator and Muffler. His is kinda loud IMO, but he used the smallest resonator and muffler because he wanted it loud. He is also running the Pacesetter 2.0 header and without the cat.

Oh yeah, that's right, I forgot to ask you about the cat. Are you keeping it or taking it out? I wanted to just replace mine w/ a high flow one, but I guess I don't need to, since I will be leaving Texas (they have yearly inspections) next year. Does the cat. have any effect on the sound, or is it mostly the resonator/muffler that determines the final exhaust note?

Taking out the cat makes the exhaust really raspy. A larger resonator will help eliminate that though.

i would go 2.5"... you're losing power by going 3", it's too big

If your not moving much air then your prolly losing a fractional amount of hp. If your moving a lot of air it will help top end power.

I have a 14" long, 5"x8" oval magnaflow muffler. It suits me, all though I think I might add another resonator because its getting pretty damn loud My low end torque is a little less, but top end is insane

Well I was going to do the 3" piping, but after some research I decided I am going to do 2.5" piping instead! I am going to leave the cat on the car, and use a resonator, I want it pretty quiet, I think I am going to use the GMPP angle cut tip! Can anyone recommend me a good resonator as well....

Yeah leave the cat on and use both a resonator and the muffler. Blown 4-banger used a Magnaflow 14" resonator and then the 5x9 muffler. I sounds good, but kinda loud. A longer resonator would help tone it down without seriously impacting performance. Being 2.5" also helps keep it quiet.
