New to modifying cobalts need advice on a good setup thanks!!

Hi. I just registered here and im new to modifying cobalts. Mines just a stock 06 SS for now. But i had a whole list of performance stuff and upgrades and i just wanted some advice from people who have done this stuff to their cars and had good results. So far my list includes:

Full Hahn Racecraft Exaust Kit+header and downpipe
k&n cold air
new intercooler(need lots of help with this)
2.8 pulley
60 lbs injectors
decent tune(dont know how to tune myself or where to get a good tune around here)
advice on a new clutch (want better clutch just dont know a good type
and i was looking for some higher performance camshafts but havent been able to find any from what ive seen all you can do is get a stock regrind :thumbsdow

also i heard that the halo led lights suck majorly i really like them and was wondering if there are anyways to modify them to make them work like they are supposed to or if there are better versions of them. also i was looking for some good led taillights if anyone knows where to find some good ones throw that out there thanks!

again any advice is open just wondering if this is a good setup its just a daily driver that i want to make a little more beefy and make it mine alos i was wondering what kind of power i would be looking at and what other parts i should get for it or certain mods i should consider thanks again

Read that.

Your setup sounds nice. ZZP's stage 3 heat exchanger is your best bet for a front mount. Trifecta also offers great mail order tunes.

You should think about going with a 2.7" pulley and tossing some meth on your setup. Meth is fun. Or go big and get 80# injectors and run e85

if you want good power gains and daily drivablity i would go with the zzp stage 3 kit, it has the 60s, 2.8, and a heatexchanger (intercooler), oversized tensioner pully, and a can tune for a great price! as far as intake, id go with a 3in like fujita, zzp, or ottp; the k&n is ok but its a small diameter... after you should get a trifecta tune!! you dont need any cams, its too much work for not much gain on our cars, dont waste your money. spec 3+ is a great clutch for your application.

I have the ZZP Stage 3 H/E and to be honest I would not get it again. It bolts up nicely with no problem and fills the entire front hole, but the fins are always bent when you get it. In my opinion that looks like shit. If I were to buy a new H/E I would get OTTP's. Doesnt fill in the entire grill as nice but overall its a much nicer quality H/E and still bolts directly up.

If your looking for a canned tune I would look into OTTP Stage 2 kit. Its about a 40 horse increase depending on your supporting mods.

But if your looking to do a custom tune look into buying a HP Tuner or finding someone who has one that is willing to tune you. Then piece the rest of the kit together. This would be much cheaper and better than buying a kit with a canned tune (just my opinion).

For an intake look into OTTP's 3inch or ZZP's 3 inch. ZZP's 3 inch intake wont work on 2007 and up I believe. Rubs against the brake lines.

As far as cams. Stock ones are suffiecent enough. Put your money else where.

Spec 3+ is a good clutch.

I would also look into meth. Not needed for that kind of set-up but def helpful.

Just my 2 cents :-)

so i finally narrowed down my performance stuff to this:
2.7 pulley or 2.8 not sure yet
zzp cai
zzp stage 3 h/e
60 lbs/h injectors and harness
spec stage 3 clutch
hahn full exaust w/ dp and headers
also wondering if i could find all this stuff in a kit without the pcm
theres a guy around st.louis that does trifecta tunes should i get all my parts on and installed first then go get the tune from him? it was on their website as a tuner in this area also still wondering about the halo projector lights are there better versions or ways to make them better than stock lights and i was looking for some good led tail lights

thanks

go tvs

06SuperSportChevy Oct 8, 2010 05:48 PM

Check out thee classifieds for the parts. If you don't need a PCM. And possibly eBay for the lights.

stonny9 Oct 8, 2010 06:55 PM

my lenses on my ebay halo lights look like crap after 2 years but the oem ones still looked fine. I personally would go with oem retrofit. there is also the griffin heat exchanger that mounts in the stock location but it is expensive.

if you do the 2.7 pully you will have to get a meth kit to cool your stuff down because a 2.8 is already overrotating the fans in the blower and a 2.7 throws that much more heat into it....
all of it usually comes with the pcm but you could prolly call zzp and ask for a deal without the tune...
i have a ppair of led tail lights and halo projector headlights for sale :twothumbs

Ok so I guess I'm going with this:
zzp cai & stage 3 intercooler
60 lb injectors
2.8 pulley (don't know much about meth)
spec stage 3 clutch
trifecta tune
oem retrofit(found a good diy kit)
led tail lights
still haven't found a good exaust thts cheap I want the Hahn but it's really expensive it sounds sexy tho

jsscriado Oct 9, 2010 01:18 PM

You should get a pacesetter header.

Stone629 Oct 9, 2010 01:40 PM

I went with the parts in my sig. The car runs pretty good and doesn't get heat soaked to bad. I haven't ran it since I did the intake, but before the intake it ran a 13.6 on a slipping clutch. I wouldn't go any smaller than a 2.8.

dman1320 Oct 12, 2010 02:50 PM

ok so i finally decided on my set up
zzp stage 3 h/e
60 lbs injectors
ottp stage 2 mounts
zzp cai
hahn downpipe and shorty header
trifecta tune
spec stage 3 clutch
2.8 pulley
retrofit halos
led tail lights
what kind of power would i be looking at and are their other mods or parts i should consider to keep the engine in good shape?

ssblackstealth Oct 12, 2010 09:30 PM

meth injection!!!

troyss Oct 12, 2010 09:37 PM

No need for meth at all

Ryan @ P&P tuning can do trifecta tunes. He's in Arnold MO let me know if you want his info and I'll PM it to you.

Depending on your mileage you might want to consider GM stage 2 if the warranty is important to you...
