if the tune was dead nuts on, it would still be running. plain and simple. tuning too close to close to the edge without accounting for a minor hiccup here and there by mechanical uncertainties will torch something and the end user can not react fast enough to stop it.

as the milage increases on the so dose the wear and if a tune has to much of an edge it will cause parts to wear at an accelrated rate due to the stress and allow other things to happen as an example to much oil in the cylinders and that will eventually lead to detonation and if left unchecked it will rattle itself apart i think that once milage gets to a point and this should be deterimend by doing some mechanical testing such as a leakdown test and a visual inspection uner the rocker box the tune should be backed off for longevity reasons but if your ok with the risk take it

all this is great info (sorry blue not about ur engine). i am building up and originally wanted to do an aggressive tune but maybe i'll have it tuned back a tad to avoid this type of situation

The tune wasn't on edge, 22* and 11.8 Afr! I could have went more but I told Dustin its not safe.. So basically it goes as is, hasn't had kr or any detonation for that matter that he can see through the interceptor or through logs. Then one day this happens. I understand there needs to be leeway within the tune, which I left timing wise and etch. Te fact is it was bluntly just a spontaneous thing or something did happen within his meth/ fueling/ or it just went. I'm not trying to argue, but saying oh it's the tune is obviously incorrect when first none of ou know any factors like was fuel ok, meth system working right, injector mes up, plug fouled! From my standpoint and where I left Dustin everything was where it should have been and was safe... So argue and say it was the tunes fault but facts show it is not.

I tune the cars to what the customer wants and even in this case I didn't because his mileage and his pulley and he was depending on meth as a fuel

No, he's saying that every car and every motor is different. 22* of timing could be good and healthy on one car but be too much on another (just an example)

100% true and I could have went more. And Dustin wanted to be leaner and more timing but I said to be safe 22* is good . I contributed his mileage in account an his pulley size... He even wanted to be in mid 12s for Afr but I said its not a good idea so I stayed with 11.8. When I went richer at 11.3-11.8 Dustin felt he should be leaner so I did... You do what the customer wants and you warn him or her if its to much.

i am in no means a tuner i understand it to a small point so i am not the one to ask if james tunes are on the edge or not.nor am i saying the tune was the fault the statement i made was just a general statement with practices i have used over the years keeping an eye on the health of an engine i learned them from a great mentor and making painfull mistakes taught me as well

if you want my opinion on tuning anyone that tunes needs to add a leakdown tester to their tuning tool kit and the mechanical health of the engine should be assesed before any tuning takes place the findings recorded and a copy given to the customer and the results discussed and the engine tuned accordingly but if the customer wants to disreguard the findings then its all on him and james i have never said ur tune was the cause i am not the one to determine that somone that is worlds above the rest like area coud determine that

We were tapped for timing on top. I had to run 94 octane to keep from that slight bit of knock at like 7000 rpm remember. Afr was at 11.8 though yes.

His previous fuel was 91 or 92 octane. So the timing which was still the same as it is now would get kr sometimes. So I said I'm gonna have to go richer or remove timing if this doesn't help. So then Dustin said ill do 94 octane. So he did, and I added timing and it took it but I said for safety I'm gonna do 22*.. And not go leaner

For clarification I was getting like .5* of knock at almost redline. I changed to 94 octane with 10% ethanol. James adjusted my afr for the ethanol and left the timing as is.

the ecm corrects for ethanol content. you have fuel trims for a reason.

have you ever tried to put out and oil fire?

Huh because it did lean out my afr a little after switching to the 94 with 10% ethanol. So James put more fuel in.

His trims did skew out for the difference so I adjusted them.
