Piston rings and gaps

What are you guys with aftermarket pistons/rings are you gapping the rings at? I've been thinking of running stock rings with 18-21 ring gaps. What about total seal rings?

What pistons are you using?

The stock rings will only fit the aftermarket Mahle pistons, the ones that use a different piston pin diameter iirc.

If you are using Diamond off the shelf pistons use either one of the following ring sets from total seal:

CR8674-40 Classic race conventional ring kit
X8674-40 Gapless second ring kit
MX8674-40 Gapless top ring kit

I use CR8674 40 with .018 gapped top ring, .012 gapped second, .015 oil control gaps. The last two engines I built are using those rings with those gaps, one holds 32psi boost from a turbo, the other 25psi from a TVS. No popped dipstick/crankcase pressure problems or excessive knock/carbon buildup in the CC.

Witt do you get any ring flutter between the first and second rings? I've heard having a tighter gap on bottom cause ring flutter between the two.

No crankcase pressure or oiling problems what so ever.

The gaps I gave you are based on Total Seal recommendations for those rings as follows:

(these apply to the Classic Race and gapless 2nd rings, gapless top will require larger gaps)
top ring: (3.385)x.0055
second ring: (3.385)x.0035
oil control: .015

When you buy the rings they will come with a guide on an orange paper stating the same.

when i built my friends 2.2 eco i followed the total seal directions to a T. ended up going .018 top and .011 on the 2nd, and a .013 on the oil controll. put 10k km on it running 12psi, no issues. have the car apart for winter, going to do a leak down test tonight just to see what it looks like.

Anybody mind explaining why you would run a larger top ring gap then bottom?
