Plastic piece
Hi, i have a nonrunning lsj and i was cleaning my oil pan and found this piece in it. |
Looks like part of the chain guide. |
I second that it looks like part of the chain guide. If the engine is non running, take the timing cover off and take a look.
|
Yeah I would assume it is cause that’s the only plastic piece that looks black in the engine but if it’s broken could it cause bad timing or just noises? |

The chain is really tight and I still see the black piece still looks like it’s intact at the top, a engine camera is coming today, so I’m going to check out the pistons and valves and see if they are damaged and if they arnt then I’m prob just going to replace the chain. |
Anyone know what brand the chain is it has a r stamp on almost every link, as well as I only see 1-2 black links no other color, I’ll add a pic to the google photos |
Do you know why it's not running? Is the engine currently timed correctly?
I think your best bet is (assuming it's in time) is to do a leakdown test, and carefully spin it by hand. If those tests are good, then get a new timing kit (not just the chain). OEM is your best bet for quality. If the leakdown shows issues then you'll have other considerations for repair. |
Engine stopped at a stop sign and the starter would just spin, thought it was the starter so I had someone try to push start me and I would dump the clutch in first to start it, it’s had a huge backfire towed it home and all the rockers were broken pins everywhere, when engine camera comes I’m going to look and update with a new post. |
Sounds like it jumped time. Could have fubared your pistons as well as screw up the head. Buy or barrow a boroscope and look down in the cylinders. I wouldn't spend money on timing chain or head components until verifying cylinders are in decent shape and going from there. Might be easier to just source a junkyard long block.
