problem, need help fast

hey guys, i have a little upgrade im installing on my LSJ right now, its 2.9 pulley and i got the oversized tensioner, but i cant for the life of me get the fucking belt on and i tried both the tensioner and the pulley had the spring compressed all the way down, anyone have any insight for me? can i just use the stock tensioner pulley?

damastah 03-29-2012 06:51 PM

never done it before, but i think you should. i dont see why not...

i remember a few years back some of the cars i put belts on were really hard.

Bluelightning 03-29-2012 06:52 PM

Are you sure the belt is sitting properly on all the pullies? There's really no other reason why it wouldn't go on.

fatchellparty 03-29-2012 06:55 PM

okay if it should fit ill try again tomorrow, it was kinda cold out probably about 0 degrees celsius maybe the belt contracted too much from the cold..

Bluelightning 03-29-2012 07:00 PM

And make sure the belt isn't sitting on the edges of the lower pullies. Can be tough to see and get them to sit properly sometimes.

fatchellparty 03-29-2012 07:12 PM

okay thanks

Trav3480 03-29-2012 07:17 PM

I had to unbolt my sc'r a little and allow it to wiggle a little it to give room for the belt, then re-bolt it down tight.

cobaltguy889 03-29-2012 07:23 PM

Its gonna be hard, I was rocking a 2.9 pulley with the stg2 belt, stock tensioner and it was tight, its gonna be pretty hard with the oversized tensioner, unless your running the stock belt.

fatchellparty 03-29-2012 08:06 PM

Ill try the loosening the supercharger thing and i am on the stock belt

K-Train04RL 03-29-2012 08:12 PM

should fit, double check everything. use some muscle and do it up and enjoy.

jonathan923 03-29-2012 08:35 PM

yea its alittle complicated but i usually do it by my self one hand pushing down the tensioner and the other putting the belt in place. at the beiginig was a **** but make sure the belt is setup properly on all the pulleys. unless your running the belt in a different way then i dont see why you should be having a problem..

YelCal7 03-29-2012 09:03 PM

To be honest, I am on stock tensioner with stock belt on my 2.9 pulley. I did had shorter belt but blew off then I slap back stock belt back on and it's fine ever since.

fatchellparty 03-30-2012 06:21 AM

Yeah I had the tensioner completely compressed and the belt was just a little bit to short im gonna try it again today its a bit warmer, and try to get a buddy to push the belt on while i compress the tesioner, if that doesent work im going back to the stock tensioner pulley. Oh yeah and it seems as if the spot where im supposed to put the 15mm wrench is starting to round off no doubt from trying it a thousand times, anyone have any advice as to something else i could use? thanks.

startingline05 03-30-2012 06:38 AM

This is kinda lame but it works. Take the tensioner pulley back off, put the belt over it and o. The sc pulley, then put the tensioner pulley back on while compressing the tensioner and making sure the belt stays on. Sounds complicated it but it works.

fatchellparty 03-30-2012 06:53 AM

I actually tried that as well, but even with the tensioner compressed all the way i could not get it to line up, there was still not enough slack in the belt, im seriously considering just going back to the stock tensioner.

fatchellparty 03-30-2012 03:22 PM

put the stock tensioner pulley back on, bolted it all up and its perfect for anyone who puts on a 2.9 pulley you can use the stock belt with no problems.

YelCal7 03-30-2012 03:27 PM

Yep, that's what I did. I had no problems since shorter belt completely torn off.

fatchellparty 03-30-2012 08:33 PM

only problem now though is the belt is squeaking even though its on all the ribs, i think its just from the cold though, it didnt do it today when it was around 5 degrees now its below freezing, stops when the car is warmed up as well.

Jdam8139 03-31-2012 09:52 AM

Are you sure the belt is tight enough. The stock tensioner doesn't apply a whole lot of tension. I know when I blew my belt up with a 2.7, I swapped it out for a 3.0 that I just so happened to have lying around and ran it with the stock belt for a couple weeks. But with the stock tensioner pulley, there was still quite a bit of play (relatively speaking of course) in the belt. If you're running a 2.9 on a stock belt and stock tensioner, it might be squealing just because the belt is too loose.

startingline05 03-31-2012 10:08 AM

just watch your boost when you go WOT and see if it bounces around. i would suggest buying the shorter belt atleast. i ran the short belt for my 2.8 and stock tensioner. when i went down to a 2.6 is when i finally added the bigger tensioner w/ the shorter belt.

fatchellparty 03-31-2012 04:29 PM

Boost gauge doesent bounce at all and the belt is just as tight as it was before the pulley swap I'm pretty sure it's the tensioner that's squeaking I'm going to lube it up to serif hat fixes the problem

Jdam8139 03-31-2012 06:09 PM

Oddly enough, mine just started doing this too...and you're right, I think it is the tensioner. Let me know if lubing it up cuts out the noise

My belt was not loose it was perfect. But I did put on ZZP Phenolic Spacer today and the belt is alittle bit more tighter fit. But overall the car is PERFECT! ZZP Phenolic Spacer SHOCKED ME! It's a MUST have for any Cobalt SS SC owners!

Jdam8139 04-01-2012 12:45 AM

Yeah, I plan on picking one up soon... I already have meth and dual pass, so with the spacer I can't wait to see my IAT2's

Tonight I saw the difference between IAT's drop to 6.0F AFTER A PULL....now granted, during the pull they weren't that close, but after I let out and coasted down I looked over and there it was haha. 8gph nozzle FTW

Found the problem, the hub was pressed too far onto the supercharger shaft so the pulley was not perfectly aligned with the tensioner pulley and it was causing the pulley to vibrate on the alternator pulley thus causing the side to side movement and creating the squeak when the motor was cold, going to the shop tomorrow to have the hub pushed out a small ammount, should be good then.
