ringland failure?

Pretty sure cylinder 1 ring land broke. Assuming there's no damage to the cylinder walls etc, could anyone give me a ballpark estimate of what it may cost. I have $3,500 to work with.. Trying to figure out if I should fix or just sell the tvs /coilovers and get something else. Really love the car, would hate to have to do that. As soon as it happened I pulled over.

Dip stock popped out, plug has oil on it,head gasket around that cylinder has some oil residue.

Make sure that's it, but you can grab a LDK from ZZP.

You'd have to call them about it because it's not on their site right now but was 2k.

Do a compression test to varify. Don't give up on your car over something simple like that. If the cylinder happens to be fine, measure/hone the cylinders and put in some forged Pistons. If it's damaged send your block to Mr.B to get some upgraded cylinders put in. Then you have a stronger motor.

Find out why it went down if it did. Typically ringlands don't just break because they feel like it...

I think I know why it happened. I've never worked on an engine other than basic stuff so I'll be dropping it off at a shop by my house.

you cant tell if the engine is damaged internally just from the signs of an oil leak and it looks like its coming from the tensioner

Yeah I know. Going to try and have it at the shop this week. Not sure when they will get to looking at it. Just hoping new pistons/rings will be all I need.

This picture is upside down I think. Took it with phone.

Same thing happend to mine. Cost 2000 including machining gaskets valves new pistons and a 30 over bore .

mrbelvedere 04-30-2015 12:18 PM

you should never bore an ecotec it should be resleeved but if you have to dont go more then .010 over the sleeves are only .060 thick to begin with

I have no idea why you think that oil leak is a sign of a ring land failure. You have a leak from what looks like where the head meets the block.

Perhaps you should describe "ring land failure" to us from your perspective. Maybe we are all on the same page, maybe we are not.

The shop said piston 1 was melted. Not sure if the Rings melted or the actual piston. I haven't been up there yet to check it out, I just meant ringland because of oil on the plug mostly. I just happened to notice the oil there too. I don't know much about that stuff so I was just trying to figure out what it might be.

So yeah one piston was very bad, others weren't as bad. I took oil pan off to check rod bearings because I had a knock 17 miles after picking it up, need new crank and rods. He said they looked fine. -.- fixing it myself now.

Exact same issue

I'm in the same boat. I just tore into my bottom end today 5-27. Piston number 1. No scarring on the cylinder walls. Everything else appears to be mint.
