Smashed header

I had to cut and weld a smashed header in the desert. I think It runs OK. Is it hurting anything? |
Looks fine to me. Ive seen dyno tests where they take an engine with headers and do a baseline, then smash the runners in with a hammer and the power stays about the same. I see no issue with what you have there if youre happy with how it runs.

denting a primary tube is one thing, but it looks like that "collector" is restricting the top primary tubes quite bad. keep in mind that if you cant get rid of the exhaust it will drive cylinder temperatures up leading to detonation, and ultimately breaking a piston or hammering out a rod bearing. i would be cutting off that collector and building a new one.

I agree with you Sharkey, but have you seen how the stock headers look for these NA engines? The outlet is tiny compared to what he has there with this aftermarket header.
|
yea, a stock n/a manifold isnt great flowing, but thats not really relevant here. this is in a sand car that lives at medium to full throttle most of its life, with a blower and a 2.9 pulley on it. it may not be the end of the world, but its not helping things either.
|
Damn, I really need to learn how to read. Still, an lsj exh manifold isnt anything great in terms of flow. Gm stage 2 might be close/under his power level and stock manifold was always fine with that, no? Im definitely not as well versed with the lsj than you, but i still think OP would be fine to run the header how it is. Thats just my opinion. |
like i said, it may not be the end of the world, but its not helping things. a stock manifold is nothing glorious but it has roughly equal flow for all cylinders, here you have 2 cylinders flowing well and 2 that are restricted. without seeing inside the header its hard to tell how restricted it actually is and how much an impact it will have on performance.
like i said, i wouldnt run it like that and id be cutting it apart and building a new collector. |
The guy filming this hit me right on the pipe. The car doing the wheelie ia a Funco GTQ with a CBM LS7 stroked to 440 ci Whipple charged, race gas 1100 hp. We went from Glamis to Gordens well California is why its so smooth here. Sorry its FB. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?sto...00000983144564 If the dent does not hurt that bad then I could run this small runner genuine long tube header vs the 1.75” thats on there??. Do you think I’ll lose with this or gain from the tube length? I guess the question is would you buy another short tube pace setter 1.75” or this long tube? https://www.kartek.com/parts/kartek-...12-outlet.html |
that kartech header is a nice looking piece. the long tube design should help increase torque, and that merge collector will help all around. i wouldnt get too hung up on it being 1 5/8 instead of 1 3/4.

guarantee it still makes more than enough tq to grenade that 6-rib
