Spark Plugs
Going to replace the spark plugs in my Cobalt this weekend. Any suggestions? Its A completely stock SS/SC with Borla high flow CAT and muffler.
|
time and time again i keep hearing ngk brk-07e or something like that. google search something like 'best spark plugs cobaltss.net' or something i'm sure ull find a good thread on here about them. also, i might have a set if ur interested, only used them for 5k miles

BKR7E are one step colder, which you don't want if you're stock.
Stock plugs are BKR6E if you want to go NGK. I know they aren't gapped correctly for stock, but I couldn't tell you what they should be gapped to. |
Got some Autolight double platinum and gapped them .042. Still has a bit of a surging issue. Will do the fuel filter next.

0.042" is too large of a gap for the LSJ. Gap them to 0.035" if you are stock or lightly modified. Autolights have been known to give people trouble with these cars. http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...P2630C193.aspx ^ These are what you should have purchased. |

The surging is most likely due to spark blow out.

for a FI motor, yes, a .035 gap is much more appropriate. that .042gap sounds like maybe the 2.2 or 2.4l motors

Really? I got the gap number from the Haynes book. Really think that the gap should be smaller?
My car's plugs came gapped from the factory at 0.035" (my owners manual claims 0.039" for 07's). |
Really? Oh wow, that stinks. I will take them out and re-gap them. Hopefully it will run a lot smoother. Thanks

Any suggestions for my LSJ? It's tuned with a 2.8 and 60s. I got stock plugs right now and it runs pretty smooth but I need to change them out anyways since they're getting old.
Stay with the stock ones? |

Ngk 2 step cooler
For his mods 1-step colder plugs are more than enough. |
When I had my LSJ I bought Autolite's Iridium's, gapped to .032 and never had issues.
I was getting random missfires in my LNF, bought Autolite' plugs and gapped to .032 Missfire gone. just my .02 |

Gap them at 0.035". |
I ran 1 step colder on stage 2, wish we had a better guide on when what plug is needed at what stage.
|
I replaced mine last week and used NGK BKR7E on my stock LSJ, I had bought them for when I'm going to install my 2.9" pulley but installed them regardless.

I ran the stock plugs through GMR S3, and just recently dropped down to the BKR7E's once I installed my cams. You can technically run 1-step colder plugs with GMS2, but "can" fall into issues with fouling due to not producing the power / heat to warrant a colder heat range. You had the GMS2 hardware (pulley, injectors, etc.) but were running a custom tune werent you? Prob making a bit more power than what GM's tune provides. |

GMS2 was designed with the stock plugs thus why I always recommend them to members asking which plug to get.

Spark plugs?
I see the stock spark plugs if chosen as NGK are the BKR6E with a heat range of 6 and 1 step colder are the BKR7E with heat range of 7 and 2 steps colder are the BKR8E with heat range of 8. And rule of thumb for every 75 to 100 HP drop 1 step colder when doin internal engine work such as cams and so forth. But what about the iridiums. The BKR7EIX or the BKR8EIX? I have a zzp 2.7 pulley, cold air intake, zzp headers with full exhaust, zzp dual bypass, and zzp larger heat exchanger (radiator). Any suggestions?
