Stage kit questions??

Hey guys will someone help me with this? Question is can you run a 2.8 pulley without cams?? Turbo Tim at zzp says I'll need cams to run below a 2.8 pulley and he says the 2.8 is one size too small and I will need cams with It.. It doesn't make sense to me cause all the stuff I've read about these kits says that if you run a 2.7 or lower you will need cams! Someone help

cole3883 05-08-2012 05:22 PM

tons of people are running a 2.8 or lower without cams, myself included

Im running a 2.8 without any issues at all. You can run the block stock on any pulley but if your are building the engine for power, adding cams is always a good idea. Figuring out if you are going to keep the car supercharged or go turbo swap will also help your decision on how you mod the car.

riceburner 05-08-2012 05:23 PM

yea ur fine just get 2/8 and 60#, 2 degree colder plugs and tune and ur good to roll

I was actually wanting to go with 50# Siemens injectors.. That shouldn't max the injector so I'm good! Thanks guys I figured Tim was mixed up on that..

How much boost do you make with the 2.8 pulley on your car??

Sharkey 05-08-2012 10:11 PM

im running a 2.7 just fine on my stock internals, no cams. to make better use of the extra boost cams will help, but its going to affect driveability.

dont worry, toss the 2.8 on there with 60lb injectors. im not sure why zzp is now insisting cars cant idle correctly on 60s, my car idles great after i took their crappy tune out that gave me idle issues, warm up issues, and set lean codes. they sent a couple flashes to me to get full throttle correct then ignored me. i tuned the car myself, as an amature with hp tuners i made the car run a heck of a lot better than they could.

That's shitty!!! I've heard bad stuff about zzp!! Great stuff and that's where I get everything but just bad customer service.. Well I'm probably just going to hp tune it at my buddy's shop (camdup racing) so I don't have to deal with that!!

How much boost are you getting with the 2.7 pulley w/60# injectors??

Sharkey 05-08-2012 11:12 PM

around 17-18psi.

sick CCSS 05-08-2012 11:17 PM

the #50 injectors will work fine, im on a 2.7 with the 50's.

Sharkey 05-08-2012 11:32 PM

what sort of injector duty cycle are you hitting? im hitting 71%,

How can you tell what your duty cycle is.. Guessing interceptors?

sick CCSS 05-09-2012 08:34 AM

Not sure what my idc is I'm getting gauges soon .

briank6102 05-09-2012 03:36 PM

Here's a question for you. Theoretically if you had complete bolt ons, injectors, etc.. could you just change a pulley and not need to change the tune? And if you do need a changed tune what do you change?

kdub1492 05-09-2012 03:40 PM

Any time you change your pulley, bigger or smaller, you will need to tweek your tune

sick CCSS 05-09-2012 05:28 PM

well zzp dosnt give you an option for their pcm. someone said the computer can adjsut for this, this may or not be true, but IMO, they prolly run their tune rich, so if someone does put a smaller pulley on, it will be safe also. almost same as what people do with the gm stage 2 kits.

that is exactly why i asked that question!! i dont know about the whole can tune.. im going to have mine hp tuned at my buddy shop (camdup racing).. i think you just get more with a hp tune!!

sick CCSS 05-09-2012 06:13 PM

I'm a believer in hp tuners also as far as getting more power this allows you to have a more accurate tune based off of your mods plus every car is different so they will all react differently to certain mods

Sharkey 05-09-2012 10:19 PM

when you get some mods on the car it is better to have the car tuned properly instead of a canned tune. you may or may not make more power (in my case i doubt it, im still running the same timing table and afr is about the same), however everything will be set up correctly. full throttle, as its the most important to keep the motor in one piece, isnt the biggest deal in tuning. when changing to bigger injectors, different intakes, etc its a lot more work to get the idle, cruise, medium throttle, and coast down set correctly to make the car drive like stock.

i spent about 6 hours this weekend driving around tuning my car. 5 hours was spent working the error out of the ve table, cleaning up the maf calibrations and some other tweaks for light and medium throttle. id say less than an hour was spent correcting the maf calibration while in power enrichment, i think i flashed it 3 times and i was happy.

in theory, depending on your tune you should be able to drop down a pulley without issue. the theory is dropping a pulley size just gives less air flow, and your maf will be reading less air so the computer will command less fuel. in a perfect world that would work, however its best to always log and tweak it as needed.

briank6102 05-09-2012 10:32 PM

^Why would you want your car to drive like stock? That's what I thought about pulleys also.

cole3883 05-10-2012 01:55 AM

stock but faster of course is what he means lol. i wish my car drove like stock. zzp's canned tune hurts my feelings :(

Sharkey 05-10-2012 02:20 AM

by stock i mean driveability wise. i want the car to drive smooth, idle nice, start and warm up smoothly, have good throttle response, and get decent fuel economy. thats how a stock car drives. i dont want the car to bog, buck, idle rough, and set codes. on top of this i want the car to go like hell when i step on it. with the zzp tune my car went like hell but didnt do everything else very well.

modern fuel injection is a wonderful thing, and tuned correctly, even a highly modified car should be able to drive smoothly without feeling like a highly modified car, till you step on it of coarse.

nwss 05-10-2012 03:17 AM

just save your money for a tvs or a turbo swap

carstedt 05-10-2012 03:24 AM

stage kits IMO are not worth the price u can piece things together for alot cheaper anyways
