Standalone ECU questions
Does anybody know who makes one for our cars and what the advantages to having one are?
Besides tuning... Thanks |

No lol.. I have no idea... only way u can do a standalone is if u can somehow run it with the bcm........... bcm worka along with the pcm ike mileage, start up wipers blah blah blah, so I'm unsure if it can be donw.
|
Most are / can be modified to be universal (I Think)
I've used Megasquirt.. I suggest you take a class on tuning if you haven't already and are planning on DIY unless people already have tune files online to download otherwise it is VERY standalone haha we tuned a miata from ground zero and it took weeks to do |
I've used mega squirt also but I'm unsure if it can be done correctly.

Ok thanks guys

motec pro efi fast xfi easiest way to do it. get the msd distributor and dump the coils. you will lose the bcm in this process as well. |
Standalones are usually for cars that do not have such a tunable ecu such as ours. I dont really see too much of an advantage for having a standalone for a cobalt. I had the AEM EMS on my Miata when it was turbo'd, it was a pain in the ass to tune. After the LS6 swap from V8 Roadsters, we used the CTS-V's ECU that came with the Harness, and LS6, (I no longer have this car anymore before anyone asks)

I bet that was a fun car tho |
if you're going over 700whp, then yes. if not. keep the stock ecm.
|
haha your funny
|
there are two people on here who have made 600+ whp on the stock ecm. just have to know where to bend it to your will to get it to do what you want
|
I have hp goals. but I usually try to keep them within my mental capabilities
I have been surprising myself lately tho that cummins build went really well. Gave me a really crazy idea I wanna try out on the cobalt that I haven't heard of anyone trying yet. Would be something really different, sick looking, and super efficient. Still trying to pull it all together in my head before I dive in. I'm not so much looking for 600 hp more like the perfect daily driver/weekend warrior, so I guess the stock ecm will work for me after all |
You have a good pcm that can run speed density and maf thats fairly well supported by HP Tuners. I wouldnt even consider looking at a stand alone. Now if you were to have a crummy pcm that used alpha-n and was only kind of supported by hp tuners then you would do well to consider one.

there is no point in running sd on the lsj ecm. well imho at least.
you're not thinking about a compound turbo setup are you? |
