Update

Today I talked with the shop doing the crankshafts. They are starting to redo the first one as they wait for the second billet core to arrive.
They have guaranteed me that these cranks get top priority and that they will both ship by Oct 7th. This is really stretching the schedule for putting the engine together.
The same company is also making 1 set of billet connecting rods which are to be shipped at the same time. The stress test for the rods shows them holding to 600 hp/cyl.
We also have 1 of the 2 turbo switching modules ready. These modules will open and close the exhaust depending on which turbo is being called to produce the boost. These modules are one of the things that seperates this project from the tt Supra's.
The cotton batten looking stuff is the same stuff that Santa Claus and the space shuttle use for heat. This protects the electronics that will operate the modules. This material allows you to hold a acetylene open flame on one side and your bare hand on the other, with out burning your hand.

Thanks

A small update for this week.
We will be doing custom billet front and rear grilles. We need to take care of the stock hole for the exhaust and I really like the billet grille look.
We are also checking into getting the headlights painted inside as well as converting to projectors.
As well the process has started for the next bell housing. This means that the flanges were sent out to get water cut and more material was ordered for the center section (yes it is 12" sewer pipe Paul )
A lot of progress was done on the supercooler's new design, along with a new name, the "MT Supercooler" after the two design engineers.
This weekend the cylinder sleeves are being installed, pics next week.
Many parts have arrived for the conversion/chassis but we are still waiting for the 4 link setup before that part proceeds. I am really hoping by the end of next week, that will arrive.
The crankshafts are once again underway with a promised completion date of Oct 3 -7th. The rods should be completed at the same time.
I hope the upcoming week brings lots of needed goodies.

Victory....has the shop you're getting yours done at considered producing a RWD conversion kit (obviously would be high-dollar) or taking on other Cobalts in the future? If this is successful, I could see a lot of people that could afford it getting RWD.

Emperor..I miss RWD too. I need to get my Buick running again. I'm about to say screw the +1 torque Buick motor and go with a -1 torque $800 Crapa (Napa) Chevy crate motor just to get the beast back on the road

Ever since I decided on RWD I have been dreaming about how it will feel. I grew up with rwd and that is where my heart is.

To answer both of you getting this done is not cheap but for people who want rwd, it is doable.
The shop doing my car would be all to happy to do more Cobalts but what they are doing for me wouldn't be necessary for everyone.
Remember that built into my conversion is the NHRA approved chassis that will allow me to race on the pro dragstrips. Then there is the fact that I am having huge tires, which means wheel tubs.
The front end suspension/engine cradle is also being made from scratch because I am putting in the T-56. This means moving the firewall back and changing the exhaust tunnel to fit a driveshaft.
If you are just wanting to basically have a rwd Cobalt along the lines of a Solstice/Sky then all of what I am doing isn't really needed.
One of the shops involved has kicked aroung the idea of using some of the components from the Solstice to do the basic rwd conversion, without the provisions for huge HP.
This company has said that if there was enough demand for such a kit, they would seriously look into producing them.
I have discovered companies that do make many of the components for rwd conversions and once they have the proper dimensions they can fabricate the main peices.
The cost for doing just the rwd conversion without the complete chassis is likely going to cost more than most would spend on a Cobalt, I mean it's only a Cobalt, right :rolleyes""rolleyes:
Personally I would love to see others choose to do this and if we have serious demand, I would do all I could to see this done.
One other thing, anywhere there is a race track, there are shops capable of doing this. I was amazed how many results I found when I typed in "rwd conversions" into google.

Victory--as far as RWD goes, I would like to use my current 2.0 SC engine--I'm not looking for insane power, but an advantage to keep up with the Corvettes in Autox. Maybe possiblility of adding a turbo later for some extra fun on the track, if ya know what I'm saying. I would HAVE to have an LSD, though.

My car's already paid off, so I'm not too worried about the cost. (as long as we're not talking like 20K to go RWD with my stock engine) I'm very sure I'm not the only one that would be interested--I see them occasionally on Forza 2 multiplayer tearing it up.

Damn it man, I was hopping this thing would be done and I could see it when I get back from this tour. You realise that I'll be finishing a 15 month tour in Iraq, with your build starting before the tour and not finished when I get home? WTF!?

Anyway, I'll go hang out at the shops with a 240B to give them a lil motivation to finish it so I can see it before I gotta move to Florida.
