Made the switch

So today I made the switch from conventional oil to synthetic blend oil....dunno if you guys have done this but it seems to run a lil smoother. I was told not to use full synthetic b/c the car wasn't made for full synthetic and that I would actually be wasting my money. Anyone else use the High RPM synthetic blend motor oil?

You should take one of those empty bottles of semi-synthetic oil and beat the person over the head who recommended it to you.

Semi-synthetic is a waste of money. Typically, a semi-synthetic is 15-20% synthetic. You're paying extra money for virtually no benefits.

Whoever told you not to use synthetic should be beat over the head with an empty bottle as well. That's 100% BS.

Use a full synthetic like Mobil 1 and follow the oil life monitor. Your engine will love you for it.

Hahahaha I'm a lube tech and have been so for some time and its true that semi-synthetic doesn't do anything good for the price you pay for it. Our cars will do fine, if not better with a full synthetic.

just so you know if you read your cobalt manual it recomends using Mobile 1 5w30 synthetic. just some info

yea, there's a couple oil myths that have been circulating for years, and you listed a few!

use full synthetic, it's not much more expensive and is better and lasts longer. there's no problem with switching back and forth from synthetic to regular, but why would you ever want to, ya know? in the grand scheme of things, oil is pretty cheap. i did full synthetic oil changes for about 30 dollars in my 2.2, the 2.0 will be a little more bcause it's an extra 1.5 quarts. but, when you're talking about 30 or 40 dollars maybe 2 or 3 times MAX a year, there's really no reason to be switching back to regular.

how long can I wait to change my oil then if I use full synthetic?

also what do you guys do with the old oil if you change it yourself? I can't really burn it cuz I live in the city....so just wondering

shouldn't need to do it anymore than 5,000 miles apart. you can get away with longer as well.

for the oil, you can probably take it to a recycling center, or some autoparts stores will take it. at the recycling center by me, it's like $1 to give your used oil.

LOL, yea they are all right. Run Mobil 1 fully synth. You will not have to change it as often also. Car will run better and longer. You will save money in the long rung for sure. :twothumbs

Autozone takes it for free.

I change mine every 3k-5k but it all depends on how I drive. If I go to the track and run the car hard I change it at 3k that time around. If I drive normal 5k. Check the oil once a week and if it starts to change from a carmel color to darker and darker it is time to change it. The darker the worse it is.

CCBalla10 07-27-2007 12:16 PM

thanks all you guys helped me out a lot...after 3k miles i'm gonna switch again to M1 synthetic and do it myself. +1 for all you guys

Full synthetic is the best thing you can put in your engine.
