Motor Oil
Hey its about time for my 2nd oil change, what oil do you guys think i should use Castrol Syntec or something else? And what oil filter is best? :poke:

Use Mobile 1 and any filter. Fram is good purilator is also. If you start chaging oil brands you can cause the different oils to varnis, and possible turn into sluge. You will not have as much a problem with synthetics. So bottem line is to try to stay with the same oil through out the life of the engin.

I'd just stick to the GM filter and Mobil 1

Run at least a 5 - 7k OCI. Anything less is just wasteful. |

Ok I understand....If you are changing oil brands just flush the system first with motor flush andn the new oil brand. This will decress the chance of different oils reacting badly with echother. Also you will have less of a chance of problems with synthetic oil. |

just remember as everyone always knows....once you go synthetic you cant go back ;) lol...but id say go Mobil 1 Synthetic and a Fram filter/AC Delco/GM Filter...thats what im doing for the life of my engine

Normally it makes me cringe when people use Fram filters due to their canister filter's internal construction. However, since the Ecotec has a permanent canister and removable element... those problems are no more.

I'd say go with Mobil 1 Synthetic and an AC Delco (GM) oil filter. They offer the best protection you get get for your engine, run that combo and your engine will be running like the day you bought it for a good long time ;)

the fram filter part # is CH9018, and most likely if you want the ACdelco filter your going to have to go to the dealer for it

I got the fram filter when i did my oil change and i was more impressed with the AC delco one i took out. It had more filter area and seemed stronger than the fram one. Just my thoughts

i just picked up my oil n filter today. 43.64 for 6 quarts mobile 1 and an acdelco filter i think it was sumthing like # C454G acdelco

does synthetic make differences in a 2.2?.....is it really necessary?

.......IN a 2.2L Cobalt you really don't need to run synthetic oil (unless your engine internals have been upgraded). 2nd, "DO NOT USE FRAM OIL FILTERS". During a tech class I attended a few years ago, we cut several filter brands in half. A Fram filter is constructed entirely from paper(internally), and thus is prone to deterating quicker, causing poor filtration. Their was no internal metal casing(framing) to help hold the paper together. I use to be a die hard Fram user until that class. Also.... We did a oil viscosty test, and Castrol Motor Oil was the clear winner. Personally, I use only AC Delco brand filters, and Castrol Motor Oil. :cool:

The old Fram ideolegy does not apply. However on BITOG you'll find that Fram's filter media is more porous than most on the market.
No you don't -need- to run synthetic of course.. but if you want one of the most stable, best protecting oils and you can afford it, why not? Its just cheap insurance and you can get a longer drain out of it with a bit of attention. |
my feeling is not to put synthetic in an engine if the factory doesn't call for it. my dad put synthetic in his caddy sts and it's burned oil ever since he did that and then changed back to conventional oil

I've been debating this myself. I've used Castrol GTX in everything I've had, from a Z34 Lumina to my S10's. And it's always held up well. However, I've heard quite a few people (on this board, and other places) say that synthetic is best for DOHC 4-bangers like ours. Is there really any rhyme or reason to this, or does it not make that much of a difference? I change my oil and filter religiously, so oil longevity isn't really at issue. I just want to help make sure my engine lasts...
