Ok, I'm new to the Cobalt world, need advice on performance parts
Ok, I know my way around cars have worked on them most of my life. I had a truck before that I had toyed with quite a bit, would have done more had I had the money then. Now, I know the basics on the Cobalts. Actually mine is a 2008 G5 with the 2.2 if that makes any difference. I have already added a kn filter. Here is what i'd like to do
I'd like to get a CAI (suggested brands?)
I'd like to eventually get exhaust/header for it (suggested brands?)
I'd like to eventually tune it too, but as far as I can tell there are no standard tuners only custom jobs (know anybody in the Lincoln/Omaha NE area?)
Pulleys?
Of concern to me are I drive an average of 2500-3000 miles a month, so i don't want to kill my mileage, right now I avg about 33 mpg combined
And also, CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE POST DYNO CHARTS OF BEFORE AND AFTER MODS I'm having the darndest time finding this stuff :O

I do not mean to thread jack, but since I am new, I cannot start a new thread. I am also wondering how those with power mods feel about them, and if they have gone to the quarter mile track.
I am specifically wondering if anyone with a 2.2l has run in the 1/4 mile with a Jet Chip, Trifecta Tune, and K&N CAI, or any other CAI. I am thinking of probably purchasing a K&N intake and Jet Performance Module for my girlfriends car- just for sh*ts and gigs. I love going to the track, and the Cobalt is a quick little car.
I smoked a left-hand drive Type-R like four times in a row in my g/fs stock balt LOL!!! It wasn't till we got up to about 110 that he passed me on the last run. The kid was pretty cool considering he just got burnt by a little white cobalt with a pink swarovski crystal license plate frame- I talked to him at the light afterwards, he was like "that thing is fast" haha. I was like "is that a real Type-R, when I noticed I was talking to the passenger, and it was LHD lol.
I have done some searching, and it seems most of you with the 2.2l have intake/tune/exhaust and are in the low to mid 15s, but with manal trans. Otherwise all I have seen is that stock the 2.2 auto runs like a 16.3. Is this correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If adding a Jet Chip and a K&N would make her car run 15.5-15.8 I think it would be worth it.

Between CAI brands I dont think you can notice anything...as long as we are talking cai vs cai. Even then people claims to like the SRI versions too sometimes. I have an injen intake that can be an sri or cai. I like it
A catback exhaust is going to net the same gains for pretty much all brands (depending on the size of piping). Different exhaust brands will sound very different..
A header and dp can really help out from what I have read (i have neither). I would definitely go stainless, dont cheap out
Dont both with a jet chip.. Go straight for trifecta, many people have done this on thier 2.2ls and swear by it

This is a link of many people with many different combinations of parts
EDIT: I failed again... There is a thread floating around somewhere with the times for eachcar but I can't remember where it is =\

I won't have any solid dyno evidence any time soon, but I had a dyno done on my car for a baseline...now I have an Injen CAI. I will be dynoing before I have my full exhaust installed. Then, again, after it's installed.
I will be installing a Pacesetter header (made for the 2.0...has 1.75 primaries and 3" collector), Exhaust Depot DP (catless 2.5" with resonator in place of cat), and a stock LSJ cat-back (OEM from the SS/SC) which is 2.25" for the most part.
Again, I won't be able to install any of this stuff anytime soon as I don't have money for the dyno or installation right now (I will have the shop that is running the dyno install it for me since it has to be welded just in front of the axle).
Later, once this stuff is on the car, I will be getting the Trifecta tune...I will be getting it tuned more for mileage, but I will for sure get it dyno'd after that as well so that I can show proof of what the gains are.
The unfortunate news is that the shop who did my baseline went out of business a year or two ago so the shop I am going to has a different dyno, but I'm not sure how different they are. The original had a Dyno Dynamics and the one I'm going to has a Dynojet...I know Dynojet's usually show higher and Dyno Dynamics usually run lower (so for the intake it will probably look like a huge gain when it's really not).

Ok, thanks for the posts. Here's a question on exhaust, I hate the sound of most 4 cylinder exhaust, I drove a v8 truck for years and I called them fart cans, I still think most sound like that, but every once in awhile i hear one that sounds good, nice and throaty throughout the rpm range. Any suggestions on that one?

Yeah, most likely it'll be Magnaflow that has the sound you want...you may be able to find it with something else, but it depends on the combination of header, dp and cat-back. Even a Magnaflow can sound bad with the wrong header/dp.

How about this. If there was only one modification you could do, what's going to be the best single mod you can do? ie intake, CAI, TB, Header/manifold, cat-back etc.

so are you saying that there really is no weak link/restriction on the 2.2, only improvements can be made by changing say both the intake and header/catback?
