Piston to wall clearance?
As it is the weekend I assume they are closed but is really the only way to find proper piston to wall clearance to ask the manufacturer of the piston? In my case that would be Wiseco. I heard third person that my new sleeves don't have the proper clearance (small town, they lost my phone number) for my pistons but that doesn't make much sense to me so I am trying to find out what the clearance is supposed to be in case the machine shop is going off of stock specs or something. I mean has anybody ever put in OEM sleeves just to have them be too big? If anything I thought they would need honed down to size.

Call wiseco and tell them the part number for your pistons. They will tell you what the clearance should be. Generally its .0045-.0055"

So I know everyone says don't go overbore but has anyone on here ever actually seen problems caused by a .020" or 86.5MM bore? That is the only over size piston I can get in a decent amount of time. The machine shop did not think it would be a big deal at all. It is the route I am going to take so I can keep this build moving so I hope it's just people being overly cautious. Even with a bored sleeve doesn't the LSJ have more supporting material on the back side of the sleeves than the L61. As long as I am at least as strong as I was before I should be fine. Never buying OEM sleeves again because I ended up having to do exactly what I was trying to avoid.

and I thought mine was bad with my forged pistons in the subaru my PTW is .035 |

but thats off-topic I agree with Slowbalt. the stock sleeves in these car's arent that great to begin with and you are wanting to remove more. |
Mine are 2618 as well and diamond recommends .0045

They said my piston to wall clearance varied from .0025 to .006. As I had oil consumption issued before we want to have the proper clearance. They have already put the sleeves in and decked. My only other option would be totally custom piston from idk who would even make them or how long it will take.
Anyway The. O20" over is the route I am going. Time will tell if I made the wrong decision. |
the lsj and l61 are both gen 1 blocks, ive never heard of anything saying one has more supporting material than the other. gen 3 blocks yes, but not lsj over l61.
the problem with boring the stock sleeves is they are already so thin, combined with the support structure under it makes them weak. taking more material out of the sleeve makes it even weaker. |
