power steering problem

Past few days after ive been driving my 2006 2.2 lt my power steering would stop working like around 10-90 seconds after i start driving. Looked through the manual no help at all, anyone know what the problem can be? When i restart my car it works fine then stops working again. Its getting really annoying!

No, you have to replace the whole steering rack, they dont sell the individual parts... I had to swap it when I got in an accident and it bent a tie rod... that was some bullshit.

no you dont

Go to a local chevy dealer.

Buy a power steering motor. It is a small black cylinder. Easy to instal. All you need to do is remove the panel from under the steering wheel and you will see the power steering motor. There are 2 or 3 bolts holding it in and a plug and then just unplug and unbolt it and put the new one in. Takes less than 20 minutes.

New steering column/motor is needed.

I have had my car in 3 times for this bullshit.

And that is low compared to some.

Youre right, not sure what I was thinking. Back when I was in my accident you couldnt buy just the tie rod though, you can now(just checked with a buddy of mine who works at saturn)... more bullshit.

Yeah, only bad thing is its a 200$ part.

OP just whatever you do, dont buy used. Its going to break just as fast and cost you more. Buy it new and install yourself and move on.

About 2 years ago I lost power steering in my '06 Cobalt. Over the course of a month or two it got progressively worse, from only happening randomly to happening as soon as I drove more than 20 feet in a straight line. I replaced it with a used steering engine which worked great for about 2 months, then it went out again and I've just been dealing with it for over a year now. I called a Chevy dealer in town and they have a new engine in stock for $175. At first he tried to sell me the whole column for about $450, but after explaining that the steering engine should be available separately he drilled down to it. I'll update this post on Monday after I have it installed and working for the weekend. Then I'll update again in a few weeks to let you guys know if it goes out again at all.

Cobalts are garbage, electrical nightmares same stuff happend to me and i dont think its worth putting the money into it to get it fixed (base LT model). Powersteering went, then my air bag sensor went, now everytime i come to a light and let the car idle the headlights flick and the interior lights (Cluster, HIVAC controls, radio lights) flicker and dim then the car starts to kinda mildly shake then once i start driving again its all gravy......idont know whats wrong (faulty ECU?), i think its the last chevy im gonna buy unless they get there **** together and make the cruze with quality parts and better electricals.

Steering Engine

I replaced the steering engine, not the whole steering column. I've been working perfectly for a week now, whereas it was going out after 20 feet of driving in a straight line before after getting progressively worse for a year. I agree with the prior post that it's probably just a matter of cleaning it really well.

The part costed $175. It took 5 minutes of work (plus 10 minutes to find the right socket in my messy garage.)

All you gotta do is pull off the panel below the steering wheel. Remove the 2 screws holding the steering engine in and screw the new one in. So easy a cavewoman can do it.

For me the power steeling issue was the ground coroded and I needed to reground it.

After that I've never had the motor die on my yet.
