To supercharge or turbocharge?

Ok so I'm stuck on what to do. I know I want some more power and forced induction is gonna be the easiest way to do it.

I was kinda set on supercharging cause it seemed easier and cheaper but then I got into looking for parts. The supercharger is kind of a pain to find locally in good shape for less then a grand. Then even harder to find is the manifold for the supercharger. I can find all the bolts and stuff but those two parts are gonna be the hardest to find.

Turbocharging seems to have more plumbing to do and harder fitment and clearance issues but it might be easier to do over all. Finding a turbo exhaust mani is fairly easy to do and I can find turbos and plumbing all day.

I don't really have supporting mods for either setup yet so either way would be the same as far as that goes. What do y'all think?

From what I've seen the majority of 2.2 owners supercharge them

Well that's what I've seen too which makes it even more difficult to locate supercharger parts that people are willing to part with.

I mean from the standpoint of doing something that is well documented and most people do it seems that supercharging would be the way to go but from the point of parts availability it seems that a turbo might be easier.

Turbo will get you more power.

Supercharge is cheaper.

Ok. So how much of a percentage boost would I get on a relatively unmodified engine? 40-45% maybe?

I know the lnf cobalts make what, 260hp while the lsj makes 205? I'm just trying to figure out if I would have to put in pistons and rods when I turbo/supercharge or if I can get away without them for a while.

Well, I think the 2.2 motor is good to about 250 whp. Anything above and you are asking for trouble.

So let's say I run only about 8psi on a turbo. Would that keep me under 250? In general.

I'm also thinking of a turbo cause I love the bov sound.

neither is really easier.. actually turbo prob is, you keep your stock intake manifold, alternator, and such...turbo is much better you have a plethora of options to choose from and s/c 4 cyl imo = gay

Just choose a route and go conservative. Either set up you can choose the boost.

However much I need to. And my goal is to have the bov sound when I clutch or rev the motor.

How is that statement "ricer"? The sound of an engine is the typical driving factor that makes people do performance upgrades to cars that otherwise wouldn't have anything done to them. It's really no different then someone saying the want flowmasters because they like the rumble and sound. I just happen to prefer the sound of a blow off valve more then the whine of a supercharger.

Really that's all I want forced induction for. I don't plan on racing. I know it's a Chevy cobalt and not a Ferrari and I drive it accordingly. It would just be nice to not pull up to the stop light and have some douche in a ford focus trying to race me cause typically they'll hear the sound of the turbo/supercharger and realize they don't have a chance.

I could see it being "ricer" if I was talking about turbo charging an '89 Honda accord or something but this is actually a decent car. How I drive it doesn't make it rice.

If sound is the only reason you want boost, buy one of those fake bov sound things from ebay.

I prefer a supercharger simply due to noise. the whistle emitted from a turbo spooling up pisses me off. The whine of a supercharger is music to me. That's my ONLY argument.

Dude... If you didn't know the answer to that question... you should sell the 2.2 and buy a fast OEM Turbo car and never Mod it..

It's funny that you make another ignorant ricer comment, "I could see it being "ricer" if I was talking about turbo charging an '89 Honda accord or something but this is actually a decent car."
Funny thing is I could get an 89 honda accord and have it walk circles around your car for less then you paid for your car itself let alone what you're trying to put into it for "the sound of a bov". You aren't 16 by chance and related to bubb rubb are you?

what does it matter the reasoning behind it? if he wants to have the BOV sound, then let him.

Being a douche bag about it is the reason a lot of people leave the forums and don't ever come back.

I think keeping it at 8 psi would be fine. You would be well under the 250 mark. probably around 200ish.
