upgrading the 2.2

I have decided that I don't have the time or knowledge to get all the parts and install a supercharger or turbocharger at the moment. I am wondering what else I can do to increase the horsepower a bit, because 145 hp is not really doin it for me ( car is a 2006 so most likely even less then that now). I am completely stock at the moment.

I was thinking about starting out with a cold air intake. Also thinking about adding an exhaust. I don't have any experience with cars so I'm not sure what else I can do. Read some threads about manifolds and headers? How much hp will those help? Also what does most performance parts do to the gas mileage?

bolts on do decent to the 2.2 but obviously still inferior to the SS's so those guys might pop in here and troll.

do these:

Intake/Downpipe/exhaust/2.4L Intake swap/Tune.

Intake $200 5-10hp
Downpipe $200 ish 15hp
exhaust $250 (tsudo works perfect) 5-10 hp
2.4" intake $100-$300 used Gaurenteed 14hp dynoed i believe
Tune usually around $300-$400, not totally sure there. hp numbers never the same

these mods do do a whole lot on their own but when combined and tuned it should be nice.

I planned to not do anything to my motor but i got a 2.4 intake for $100, build my own cold air intake and got a tsudo for $175, might tune it once i have it all on there and it will probably gain 25hp.

See here is when I can tell I don't know much about cars lol. I thought the downpipe and exhaust was all one thing?

Exhaust is 3 separate pieces: header, downpipe, catback. To answer your question about gas mileage, when I had an intake and exhaust I got 38 mpg on the highway. When I had all my bolt ons (intake, 2.4 IM, header, downpipe, exhaust) I was getting 32-33 mpg with a mix of highway driving and driving on curvy hilly roads. Both those were in the summer, in the winter I got like 27-28 with the same driving

So is there anywhere where I can get the header, downpipe and catback in one? Also what is the difference in k&n CAI and injen CAI

heathkidder Feb 19, 2012 10:19 PM

check out all the vendors on the site. ttr zzp are most common.
i have the badmab header which you can get around 160 plus shipping
zzp 2.5 catted downpipe around 220 i believe
and mandrel exhaust with borla muffler 350?

diff. in cai is just brand and look. i had the injen

No one sells a combo of all three but there are many options. For catbacks, most people recommend the corsa or gmpp (which are basically identical I believe) or borla which is also similar. I like my magnaflow but I admit those three sound better. All those are going to be upwards of 500-600 but you are paying for quality. You could also get the exhaust piping from mandrel exhaust systems and buy your choice of muffler, this will be a little cheaper. ZZP has good header and downpipe combos you could check out. The price of those vary greatly so you would just have to check them out. As for the K&N and Injen, basically just different brands because there is not a whole lot you can change for the intake. The injen does have the option of being short ram or cold air though.

Just to make sure I am clear, in no way expect the power gains he has posted.

If you're asking if there are companies who make a header, downpipe, and cat-back exhaust the answer is yes. Can you buy it as one kit? No not really. ZZP makes a mid-length or long tube header package (whichever you prefer). And they make a cat-back exhaust. And Vibrant makes a header/downpipe combo and a cat-back exhaust (though it will be very loud).

GMPP exhaust is made by Borla ;)
