You follow the oil life?

Do you change it when it tells you to, or do you do it every Xxxx miles?

depends if you use synthetic or not. I've noticed by the time my mileage has reached the 5-6k I run on synthetic my oil life is rather low too. but I say go till the miles, since my oil is starting to get dark so I change it.

if that makes any sense.

To start off with I changed it when I got to 45-50%...

To start off with I'd go 10-12k miles and I still changed it by 45%. That was crazy IMO
Then slowly started changing it sooner.

Now that its passed 100k, I change it at 60%.

As much as I want to trust the meter... Going that long on the oil seems crazy to me.

owlwyn 08-09-2013 06:45 AM

yeah, I've never had it longer then 7,000 and I was getting annoyed at myself for not getting it changed yet.

Only way to know for sure is to get a used oil analysis, more than likely the stock oil monitoring system is solid if you use the recommended oil, or synthetic oil. If you are concerned spend the 35 on a UOA from blackstone labs

John Mudd 08-18-2013 12:45 PM

I use full synthetic and change around 30-40%. Car runs fine, top end of the engine looks fine with the valve cover off, so I have no need to change any sooner. 80,000 miles.

redcobalt07 08-18-2013 12:50 PM

I let it get to 1-2%

chris88z24 08-18-2013 12:51 PM

Yup.

Slowbalt2000 08-18-2013 01:02 PM

I dont drive much it usually gets to ~20% before i change it but its only like 2 times a year

qwank 09-05-2013 04:10 PM

3,000 miles no matter what oil or driving conditions. no exceptions here.

If you are just gonna throw away money then buy us all some beer.

I use the oil life meter

it's $25 for 5 qts of mobil one at walmart. and I get oil filters for free at work. I've seen what happens to these engines when people wait until the oil percentage is down to 0% every time. GM even had a recall on a ton of vehicles to shorten the time the monitor counts down because of this.

$25 every 8 weeks is no big deal to prevent sludge and my VVT actuators and solenoids from sticking, and timing chain stretch.

Mr Mall Cop 09-08-2013 10:17 AM

Another one?

z062007vette 09-08-2013 11:10 AM

I let it get down to the 20-35% range. Depends on where I'm driving and such and if I have any trips planned.

3k is still way more than needed. Why not get your oil analysed and judge for yourself? Plenty of people on here have.

andrewcarr1993 09-08-2013 11:18 PM

I use royal purple and normally take it about 20-30% then change it. I'm currently at 34% and want to run it out since when I turbo it I'll replace the oil, not wanting to waste $50 when I'm spending as much as I am

SalvageBaltSS 09-08-2013 11:22 PM

All the cars I have I change the oil in, its every 5,000 .

05g5 09-11-2013 09:59 PM

Either my indicator is off cuz i put on 4-5k kms a month. And my meter goes down to like 75% by that time.. If that
Or its based off time AND kms.

Every 5000 kms
I drive it hard, i dont wonna pay lots for avoidable problems.

riceburner 09-11-2013 10:07 PM

the thing is the more often you have new oil in the motor, the mire time you have oil that isnt settled in at its proper viscosity.

i change mine between 50% and 25% though since i drive her hard

Xmetalhead2003X 09-11-2013 10:28 PM

I run 30k mile amsoil with 15k filter. I change once a year and just slightly under 12k since last change. I also throw seafoam in there a few hundred miles before change too. I end up resetting the meter a few times in between. Runs strong.

Beamer 09-11-2013 10:34 PM

used to change it when it got in the 60% range. By that point it was around the 4 month mark. I did not put typical miles like most on mine which if I did use mileage it was probably 2k-2k5 miles. With stop and go traffic along with fun driving I did not want to push it.

waste of money, most full synthetic oil wont even begin to show signs of break down until at least 5000 miles, rotella T6 is good up to 10,000+, laboratory tested by customers to test that fact.

drtibalt 09-11-2013 11:00 PM

I change mine every 3-5000 kms

iToastie 09-11-2013 11:09 PM

5,000 miles, no exceptions
