[Build Thread- Twincharged LE5] Brand new engine has milky gunk inside

Obviously, this means there was water in the oil but from where? The other day i noticed my colant was about an inch low, but its a new engine with 80 miles on it, figured maybe i burped some air out while driving. Filled it back up and didnt think too much of it.

Yesterday i was at a car meet, decided to check my oil and it definitely looks like a milky brown color on the dipstick. I also notice the coolant has gone down a small amount since then. So i take the car home (only like a mile drive) and put it back in the garage while i go get a coolant system pressure tester.

Started pressurizing the system and notice that my radiator is leaking where the end tank is crimped on... well that explains a loss of coolant but not why my oil looks milky... I took the coils and spark plugs off and was looking into the cylinders while pressurizing the coolant and i never saw nor heard any water getting into the cylinders. I did a compression test and got 178-150-165-151 which isnt great for a new engine but also doesnt indicate a whole lot of issues.

Today i plan on draining the oil and possibly pulling the oil pan to see if water is leaking inside of the block somewhere. Id like to hear some ideas from you guys, but i will also be updating this post with progress throughout the day.

Background on the engine:
zzp girdled 2.4 with fresh hone
New 88.5mm wiesco pistons
Molnar rods
All new gm bearings

Used head i had lying around
Used water pump

The oil in the engine only has about 45 miles on it and is castrol 15-40 i was using for break in before i switch it to Mobil 1.

Any input is appreciated.

Used head could be warped?

Took the pan off, seems like its leaking through the oil flow back port on the back of the block between cylinders 2 and 3. Gotta be the gasket i guess. Ill definitely check for flatness when its apart.

Did your oil level go up as your coolant level went down?

Pretty sure it's common practice to let a machinist make sure both surfaces are level. Especially when using used parts off another engine.

you can check a head/deck with a straight edge to see if its flat before wasting money/time on a machines who will deck the head. Usually its only warped if it got super hot and/or its old.

I straight edged my LSJ head and ecaulk and I spent about 3 hours each sanding and polishing it to make sure it was clean.

Yeah i shouldve been more clear

I measured everything and its flat. I took two semesters of machining in college.

It wasn't really sanding, it was removal of old head gasket with a scotch bright and razor blade.

i know most havent seen a porous 2.4 gen 2 block, but there has to be a reason zzp doesnt stand behind them. being the same design block as an lnf, the potential for the issue is there. im thinking maybe we see the issue with lnf blocks is because every lnf is boosted and making at least 260/260. i know nobody has tried to correlate the porous issue with power level as it seems luck of the draw. my thought on why nobody has seen a porous le5 is maybe at n/a power levels it wont have the issue, and there arent enough boosted le5s to get a proper gauge on it. in reality, what is the percentage of lnf's that have the issue? under 5% of total production?

its not that im hoping this is the problem, quite the opposite. it sucks to build an engine and have a major issue with it. however building engines and transmissions has taught me, if the problem isnt clear keep looking, putting it together again without finding a clear problem is just going to bite you. if the deck and head are flat, something else is going on.

I will be pressure testing it again with the new gasket to see if it still leaks. Thing is le5s are a different casting than the lnf and started production before the 86mm blocks did.

Ill be reporting back with results of the pressure test once the new gasket is on.

Another thing to note is i ran this same block for 1200 miles last summer with no coolant leaks. The only difference is i sprayed copper rtv on that one and this time around i didnt spray it.
