Ecotec 2.4 VVT vs. 2.4 iVTEC

Has anyone come across a review of the new Ecotec 2.4 VVT? I am buying one of the 2006 model GM vehicles equipped with the Ecotec 2.4 VVT and am interested to see if any of the auto/truck publications have come out with an opinion on this engine versus an engine like Honda's 2.4 iVTEC.

welcome to the site.
i didnt know honda made a 4 cylinder that big. I have not came accross any reviews on the engine. I predict that it will take till november to see any professional reviews.
which car r u getting? hhr?....... cobalt? I was going to get a cobalt ss 2.4 but its just too expensive for me right now. I test drove one though and i can tell you what i thought...

Thanks for the response. Am getting a G6 for three main reasons; Ecotec engine, Episilon platform and styling. I wish Pontiac offered a manual down in the base G6 or a 5 spd auto. It looks like the 2.4 is a heck of an engine. My wife has a '99 Honda Accord with the 2.3 iVtec (which is now upgraded in displacement and hp since 2003 to almost 2.4 liters and 160 hp. Anyway, her car accelerates great and has plenty of torque out on the hiway to pass. I have a '92 Grand Prix at present with a 3.1 6 cylinder and this car is sluggish. So I am looking forward to getting the G6.
What were your thoughts about the engine's performance in the Cobalt you test drove. The local Chevy dealers have not brought any in at this point so I did not get a chance to test out the 2.4 prior to ordering my G6.

It's pretty hard to review just an engine without having to take into consideration the trans and rest of the driveline, and even the whole car, which sort of makes direct comparison difficult IMO.

From a technological standpoint, the Ecotecs are turning out to be incredibly hearty, so score a point for the General on that one, I guess. Honda's VTEC is still much more sophisticated than GM's VVT, though. VTEC literally gives you two completely different cam profiles, PLUS the ability to phase them, whereas GM's VVT is JUST phase control. So you should be able to get more power/torque and an overall fatter curve using VTEC. I doubt the Ecotec will be as smooth either... pretty hard to top Honda on making a smooth 4-cyl...

I think you'll be happy with the G6 though. I think she's a bit heavier than the Accord, so you might feel that.... but other than that it's a fun car. I'd drive one for sure.

my 2.4 review:
I didnt feel much torq down low in the rmp's (initial "numb" response), but if you mash it, it takes off like a rocket. Yea a 5 speed probably would be better with this one. the steering was very percise and the rear followed the turning front wheels quickly, even at higher speeds; probably due to the low profile tires. the leather seats are sooooooo nice, they are worth it! so is the sound system.
I dont know much about the g6, (i thought they were putting v6 in those). From the looks of it the g6 is bigger, heavier and probaly slower, especialy if its a sedan. it does look good though, especially in that blue color. the g6 wont lose its value as much too.
I'd say test drive both cars as you can and then sum it all up.
there you go!

hi, i came from a country where people worshipped honda and ivtec engines and had a experience with few. dont worry im a ecotec guy now. love those cobalts! i think a 2.4L i-vtec engines can put out 230-240hp and about 160 tq. i dont know which one would be better but i can tell you that ivtec is really smooth..

LOL, as soon as I read that I thought "This guy must be from Ontario"

yeah, the 2.4 puts out crazy HP in a S2000, but in a regular accord, I figure performance will be very similar to a G6 2.4. I think that was GM's who idea in putting it in that car.

I just posted an article out of the new issue of R&T, where they tested a Pontiac Solstice with the Ecotec 2.4L VVT with a 5-speed.

0-60: 7.4
1/4 mile: 15.8

Wolfman 09-21-2005 08:35 PM

1/4 at 15.8 damn that sounds good for no S/C.

S2k is definitely a 2.2...

Honda makes a KA24 that is used in the TSX and Accord too.

The newest 2.4 Eco is a DI motor.

hoffa 07-02-2009 06:16 PM

tambrico 07-02-2009 08:07 PM

it was never a 2.4 it was actually a 2.0l before it became a 2.2 in its second generation thus the name s2000 and not s2400(if it were a 2.4) they kept "2000" when the upgraded the engine to keep the stigma and name of the car i.e. the s2k and such as to not tarnish the name.
