This turbo worth it?

Do you guys think this is a good deal it's a turbo kit for a 2.2/2.4. It's 100% Genuine Garrett Turbo charger Complete Alpine Developments Bolt on upgrade turbo kit with intercooler for Chevy Cobalt. Is this a good kit? What kind of a hp jump could I expect from my 2.4?

well turbo is a very big upgrade, but for one its not cheap at all, and who wants to spend 4 grand just to go fast? i rather invest it in somthing else.

soccer918843 07-26-2007 11:42 AM

Oh and I forgot to mention they want 1500 for the whole kit.

cobaltsslover07 07-26-2007 11:45 AM

yea but see i had a friend that had a 95 honda si turbo charged, and yea he got the kit and it was all kool then he blew his motor haha, but your pistions and rods arent meant for that abuse the turbo puts on the engine. plus your gonna want better brakes because your gonna need to stop faster, and just a bunch of shit that you need to swap over.

and if you didnt noticed that the s/c actually come with improved pistions stock to handle the supercharger.

The link you just put up is my car. The 2.4 engine would go nice with that kit honestly. Get it tuned locally with HPTuners and your set. You will see at least 90-100whp if you run with about 8-9psi on that turbo. Your engine will run fine with that turbo up to about 15-18psi. The 2.4 engine is pretty damn solid and can handle a good amount of boost. That turbo is kinda small, you would see roughly 300whp on 18psi and 18psi is the most you want to run out of that turbo. When i had that turbo on my car it spooled 20psi by 3000rpms.(This was when i was discovering the actuator hose came off and wasnt stopping it from boosting).

soccer918843 07-26-2007 11:58 AM

Ok I don't really know that much about turbos. So u said the turbo is kindof small what if I just bought this kit and bought a bigger turbo itself for this and sold the other one would that work or no?

elecblue06 07-26-2007 12:02 PM

probably be hitting 200WHP or so at 7 or so PSI so thats about 60WHP if it's the kit i think your talking of (ionjenztch) it's a nice kit.

don't let cobaltsslover scare you.. if tuned properly your pistons and rods will be fine till about 300hp... hell hahns got their 2.4L solstice pushing 400hp on the stock engine(not that that is a good idea) but you should be alright that turbo is good for 350 HP i think if it's the kit im thinking of... no it's not the same turbo from the alpine sheet.. according to the guy

i find this funny coming from someone who's spent probably over 2k+ in parts and only has about a 20 HP gain....

hey 2k over a 6month period isnt bad, but when you have to take out a personal loan from your bank to put a modd on your car......thats something different. i rather get into college

07cobaltowner 07-26-2007 12:10 PM

that Alpine kit you showed a link to does not come with a Garrett turbo, it comes with a Borg Warner, and the pre-programeed piggy back is for a 2.2
who are you getting the kit from?
and just for a tip since you seem slightly new to the turbo world, you really want to make sure the turbo is a Garrett, it makes a huge difference.
i bought the Alpine stg. 2 kit and it comes with a Garrett gt22 and is so effecient it doesn't even need an intercooler.
really do some solid research before you go turbo, and feel free to ask questions.

elecblue06 07-26-2007 12:19 PM

he needs to answer 1 question really where is he getting this from? because if it's ionjenztch kit then it's a very good kit. if it's not and it's 1500 new i'd e really wary unless it's just the essentials kit

he said it's 1500$ for the turbo kit. which is was I was basing my comment on .. that you spent more money and have less hp to show thats all man... you should NEVER take out a loan to pay for a mod.. only do whats within your budget.

hell if i took out a lone or had a credit card for that matter... i'd be pushing 300 WHP now... but.. i don't over spend.

i wouldnt go that route, the tuning on a 2.4 is a bitch unless you have a seasoned cobalt tuner like Witt doing it. i had a proffessional tuner try to tune mine for boost and that turned out horrible cuz he wasnt familiar with ecotec's. i'd go the hahn route and save yourself some big headaches...you get what you pay for and hahn is worth it imo.

elecblue06 07-26-2007 01:20 PM

lol stupid online nd not being able to tell jokes haha

Sw4y1313 07-26-2007 01:35 PM

If thats Trevors(onjenztch) kit, then its a great one. Its the exact kit thats on my car, or was on my car... It spools hella fast(by 2k rpms) and pushes a decent amount of CFM. On 8psi i dynoed 212whp in denver(mile high), and i live in boise(aprox 2700ft). So i was probably around 220+whp. Your going to get way more then 60hp out of 7-8psi. trust me i owned it. And Witt has already said tuning the 2.4 for boost was not as hard as everyone thinks. I would get some pointers from witt or see if he could put together a base tune for the car. He said he was within 8% of his target before starting the car. All you would have to do is have someone help you dial it in. PM him, he likes to help out. Maybe you could drive over to his area and he can help you tune, your not far. Just make sure you bring lots of beer.
