Possible LNF Replacement "LDK"

So i went to see some family in Detroit this weekend to see some family and their new baby!

Anyway Im from the Poconos, and being that I drove their, my route takes me past the Lordstown plant (which was cool except i was in the balt) and the mazda 6 and mustang plant.

Anyway without going into my weekend ill talk about what was divulged to me and now you.

My cousin's husband works for an engineering firm that makes/designs and sells electrical and mechanical parts for a lot of GM cars, including their global cars. I told him how i picked up my new SS with the LNF in it due to the cash for clunkers thing and just generally talking as we are both car guys, and i mentioned how GM is starting to use the LNF is basic applications and how it was a good motor as well as the 3.6 SIDI they got going in everything.

Thats when he said it was ironic i have an lnf because right now they have JUST A MOTOR in their shop that is probably going to be the successor to the LNF motor right now called the LDK, also a turbo 4 banger, ALREADY OVER 300hp. I said its a shame its just the motor otherwise we might be able to see if itd be a 6spd or awd from the tranny but o well.

Apparently the starter they are supposed to design has to last like 3-400,000 starts as the system is designed to shut the engine down at lights and extended stops etc and fire it back up quickly when needed to move in a short time in an effort to save gas or emissions. Now I dont know if i would expect any of this he said its in early stages but he definatly has the motor which runs good.

He also said they are making parts for that motor to go into the camaro, so he speculates that he is making a 4 bangor to go into the camaro, OR they are gunna bring the car overseas and have the 4cylinder available as an option there, as he also does a lot of work for opel and holden so maybe they do a knockoff like we did one of the Commodore (or you may know it G8, ya it wasnt original at all, not even the sheet metal look it up).

So, dont go flaming me or defending the LNF or saying its around or Why would GM build another mother when they have a comparable one in the v6 etc etc etc etc I dont know and either does he but here is the bottom line.

Gm has a turbo 4 bangor in early stages right now called the LDK with 300+ hp, (maybe itll work its way into a cruze) And right now they are designing it to also go into the camaro....
So im not going crazy cuz hell companies makes lots of parts and things ready to go and never bring them through, but it would be pretty interesting!!

And start your speculating...

Cruze SS. Sealed deal.

Baron7700 11-19-2009 09:15 AM

hm i bet if this was in another area there be 1000000 replies

ajjaro 11-19-2009 09:34 AM

sounds like a cruze ss to me

Baron7700 11-19-2009 11:47 AM

IF they did put it in the cruze, it seems like it would whoop up on our LNF

knowing gm it will be under rated, and maybe 300+ whp stock...

it would put a whooping on everything in its class... but 300 hp + and still fwd, this is gonna amount to huge fail when tuned with bolt ons in the traction department

EDIT:....And I was wrong lol this IS NOT an LDK motor, thanks to Maven for setting it straight

As long as they use the 300HP+ version in a AWD platform that would be nice.

awesome i was trying to find more info on it on my own but was having a hard time. I like how some of these car are mated to 6 speed manuals with awd systems, sooooooooooo GM has the parts, interesting to see if they bring it over to the US. Especially since theyre not gunna bring it over in SAAB (considering they dont own it).

here is some more shot in the dark, remember all we are merely dreaming right now. Reading up ont eh 9-5 tells you of a 4 banger turbo that does 220 and 258 lbs, which could easily be tuned for say 280-300 and vice versa as we are seeing with the LNF
__________________________________________________ ______________
On the road
Saab has more than 30 years experience in turbocharging engines and the all-turbo powertrain line-up in the all-new 9-5 further develops its rightsizing engine strategy. At launch, a 2.8-liter turbocharged dual overhead cam (DOHC) V6 engine with 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque will be offered. Shortly after launch, a 2.0-liter turbocharged BioPower E85-capable four-cylinder engine with 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque will be introduced. All transmissions will be six-speed.

I like how the turbo is right on the front of that

domin8_gt 12-10-2009 09:13 PM

GM has an agreement with Koenigsegg (sp?), Saab's new owner, that it will provide everything Saab needs to keep producing cars for at least the next 5 years. As Koenigsegg (sp?) develops more stuff for Saab I'd expect GM to start finding new ways to implement Saab's supplies into brands it still owns. Just look at what Ford is doing. Awd and turbo engines were things Volvo was doing. Now that Ford doesn't own Volvo you see what is happening. A lot of stuff Ford learned found its way into the new Taurus, especially the SHO. I hope GM learns to do the same.

X2 it would be nice to see GM do what Ford did!

Baron7700 12-10-2009 11:56 PM

to bad the saab deal fell through.... so saab is now dead.

domin8_gt 12-11-2009 02:58 PM

Saturn fell through because Roger Penske, and his group of investors, were too unrealistic. Saab lives and is now owned by Koenigsegg (sp?).

http://money.cnn.com/2009/06/16/news...reut/index.htm

I have found no information on the Saab deal falling apart.

That article is from june, they dumped saab like this week.

ya it was all over the news, saturn is dead face it.

That's nothing impressive. LNF tuners have been tweaking +300hp for a while now. However, if you were to mention that it achieves +300hp and gets +35 US miles per gallon, then you'd have my attention.

hey...300+hp from the factory is a lot different than 300+hp after tuning buddy.

Yeah LDK power plant is a good motor not sure how long it has been in opel/vaxhall's front end. I think saab has had it for a while. I would be interested to see this motor in the cruise not sure if we will see the awd would be nice but would probably put the price up quite a bit like 30k thats a lot for a compact chevy IMO.

importkiller 12-17-2009 07:28 AM

Saab is not dead yet there are other buyers out there. Saab is not Saturn and it has some history and products that other companies want in Europe. Saab may be dead in the states though!

n323er 12-17-2009 07:46 AM

^^saab is on its last legs...it has never made money for GM unkess another party buys it they are dead in the water...Sweden has stated that it will not support the company does not good at all.

ssilver 12-17-2009 08:25 AM

I still have this feeling that the LNF cobalt is the last "hurrah" for awhile... I can't see gm making an AWD turbo 4... Or even a more powerful turbo 4. They aren't going to compete with the Camaro... Period. Cars like this only come along once in a while. Like the grand national ect. They will die out for now like the 02' camaro, neon srt-4, typhoon, and muscle cars did, and be reincarnated as a semi-performance hybrid compact or something in 10 years, when gas isn't cool anymore and hybrid and electric are putting out decent numbers. Look how few of the LNF's they made... about 2000 a year ..and I still see plenty of 09 TC's setting on lots around the area.. How many regular cobalt's did they make? 200,000 a year.... The numbers just don't make sense for them to attempt to compete with the turbo imports.. GTI's and WRX's sell way more than that.. about 12k-20k a year between the two of them. The market is saturated, and GM already knows their market... us.. there is not a lot of us.. Too many people still think my TC is a cavalier.

I like to pretend they are going to make some badass affordable 300hp turbo, that might be awd, that I can trade my TC in on for, but that probably is not realistic. It is more realistic that I trade it in on a more expensive evo or sti.

n323er 12-17-2009 08:30 AM

^^agreed

importkiller 12-17-2009 08:59 AM

Yeah Ssilver is right, you will not see another gm car like the cobalt ss/tc for a while, you will probibaly never see a performance awd gm compact car, they just don't have the experiance making this type of car unlike Subaru and Mitsubishi who have been making awd performance vehicles for rally racing. AWD cars are also much more expensive than FWD. Expect the LNF and LDK to be present in mid size sedans to get v6 like power with 4 banger fuel economy. I predict more cars like the new Taurus SHO. Conservativly tuned low boost turbo engines desiged to balance fuel economy and a reasonable amount of power.

avro206 12-17-2009 01:52 PM

I have to disagree. GM has the parts to make a Cruze SS, they just lack the will.

Part of the reason I think the TC Cobalts did not sell very well was the fact the Cobalt itself, GM never really updated it, they let it get a bit old in comparing to the competition. And I don't think it was ever properly marketed.

Better gas milage and power then the 2.4L deserves some headlines. Also--since the HHR got an automatic--so should have a Cobalt--at least an option. Alot of people just don't want manuals.

Comparing the Cobalt to the new Camaro is just nuts, sorry. Not a reason why they would not make a Cruze SS at all.

Nothing will be coming for awhile though...
