Break In Oil

What oil would you all recommend that i run to break in my motor that's rebuilt
i got like 7 or so qts of royal purple as a gift for christmas but i know that isn't the best to run to break in a motor.

any suggestions, someone recommended rotella......

Im going to be running brad penn break in oil on my newest engine build.

JacBlackSS/TC 01-09-2012 01:07 PM

yeah but i doubt it will come in time i want something that i can get off the shelf i have a friend that is basically gonna trade me for it like i will give him the royal purple in exchange for a good oil to run

Brad Penn. Pay to have it overnight shipped if you're time restricted. Don't skimp on a good oil with a fresh rebuilt motor just for "convenience."

Use your brain...

...if you can't get Brad Penn, try to find the Amsoil break in oil. That's good shit too.

Here's two Brad Penn Retailers in Balt...

i'm not trying to skimp i know there were other brands that were decent, i know brad penn is the best, just trying to figure out if there are other brands as well thats all, my buddy used rotella in ams built evo he just got back, so i was wondering what all other people have used

but it doesn't matter anymore b/c jb's has my motor and they have it in stock

Honestly if you can't find brad penn some regular non synthetic oil will work. I recommend penn tho.

I used brad penn for about 3-500 miles then used regular penzoil for 1000 then Mobil one. I ordered brad penn from ZZP.

so did you keep the same weight when you eventually went back to mobil one

I put in plain jane 5w-30, ran it for 20 mins at 1400rpm. (old school style)

Drained it, put in Mobil 1 5w-30, and hit the streets.

Done.

IMO break in oil is over-rated, but its your money and engine, so do as you wish.

FYI Royal Purple isn't great, it doesn't seem to like Turbos from what I have read in the past.

Plus I wouldn't trust any oil that has had dye put into it to make it purple.

I just built and put in brad penn from zzp. I couldn't find it anywhere around me.

When you say hit the streets...do you mean you started hammering it? Seriously wondering. I have been told to break the motor in 10 ways by 10 different people.

Also...does brad penn use dye?...its pretty damn green..."the green oil"

I will be running royal purple after the break in. I don't have a good reason for it though other than I have 5 quarts of it sitting here.

Yes I went to 5w30 but ended up bumping up to 10w30. It just adds a little extra start up protection.

If your not going to continue to use it then don't. Mobil one is what gm recommends so that's what I would use.

Love that eneos stuff. I get mine from kronos. No more oil usage between changes.

Now once you guys do the initial change to get the random junk out, you're going to do 3rd gear pulls and coast downs with successively higher rpm pulls then change the oil again and call the engine broke in right?
