Frankenstien L61

Ready to read?

I've all but acquired an L61 from 07, have an 06. Trying to Frankenstien together this build to utilize the 07 (new motor) bottom end. Have an 06 head ready to go so thats no problem. My problem is going to be the reluctor ring and sensors. Also since I'm going to have it I'd like to use the new coil-on-plug ignition. Has anyone swapped for a GenII block on here? I'd like to talk or read about your experiences. Since the 07 will have rods and pistions put in I'm sure a ring change will be no big deal to my motor guy but I'm just curious to if there is any easier way of going about this. Thanks!

External crank trigger, done.

SlowShifter 02-07-2012 02:57 AM

So you agree with the plan. Good news coming from you. I'm a long time lurker.

Leafydialupking 02-08-2012 01:47 AM

Did they change the clocking on the reluctor for the 07? both cars should have the 60-2 wheel.

Just swap the cranks and use your old one. Simple. Easy. Done.

SlowShifter 02-09-2012 06:57 AM

Nah, but thanks. My 2.2 is currently fine. I'm going to build the 07 block, when I take it to my motor guy it'll be assembled with the 06 ring on crank, with an ADDITIONAL 06 head I'll have done. BOOM. DONE.

USMCFieldMP 02-09-2012 07:20 AM

If you're already set on what you're doing... why ask the forum for guidance? I'm just saying... don't mess with swapping the rings from one crank to the other. The cranks are the same with the exception of the ring. Just use your original crank.

save money, buy a ss. much more power potential not much more cost.

Yes because buying a few parts at a time with less monthly payments is completely ludicris!

New SS(SC or TC)205-260hp $18+k

New LS 145-155HP $9-12k

$6-9k left over to add 50-105HP+ Priceless

Some things in life can be bought but for some, the ability to build is Priceless.

pecorillif 02-09-2012 06:53 PM

18+k? Is that in yen. I just got a 06 g85 with 49000 miles for 9 and traded in my hunk of crap blazer for 3 so I pairs 6500 for it. DONE

Leafydialupking 02-09-2012 06:55 PM

18k+ for a TC. And 32k+ for the only sky worth buying (the coupe), aka the only eco car really worth buying if you want an eco car.

dumb

your 06 ECM wont run the CoilOnPlug ignition from the 07. BOOM failed.

Find an Eagle crank.
put that in the 2nd gen block
run all 06 sensors and ignition
profit

I guess I'm just trying to figure out what I want to use for spark and fuel. I'm not gonna buy an SS after just paying off my car when I have a Gen II block I can use, and throw on an 06 head and use 06 electronics. The bitch of it is I'd really like to use the 07 PCM/ECU but all well.

Yeah no.

Maven 02-09-2012 09:14 PM

Yeah but switching to the new style ECM just so you can run COP isnt worth it. The stock 1st gen ignition is just fine. If youre really concerned about it switch to MSD coil setup.

SlowShifter 02-09-2012 10:02 PM

Thanks for the suggestion! We'll see. Build is still very premature and isgoing to take a while. Plenty of time to get it all sorted out.

zfissette 02-10-2012 08:35 AM

guy, i bought my 2007 sc bone stock with 50k miles for 10,000. Its not 18k. do a used car search or even check the classifieds here on this sight. a clean lt goes for 6-7, trade it in and have payments on what, a 4 grand loan? 100 bucks a month? could pay it off in a year even on mcdonalds money? and then look at the power output on the dyno threads. the record for a naturally aspirated 2.2 is 180 hp, 25 less than a bone stock sc, and thats THE RECORD. Trade in for an sc where the record is 898. a few grand in the right mods and she will be at 300 at the crank easy.

orrrr you could buy the lt or ls for 4-5 grand with low miles and dump 5-6k into it and run circles around your SS all day long!

zfissette 02-10-2012 03:57 PM

your 2.2 will NEVER run circles around my 2.0. Check the records. theres only been one 2.2 that made as much as mine and it had a fully built motor and a complete zzp turbo, in other words, he had way over ten grand into the motor alone, and made 2/3 the power that same kit made on a 2.0.

i was running 25psi out a s256et turbo my friend...with a fully built motor. the car would absoulutely destroy your almighty 2.0. I had 11k into my car total including redoing my interior and a powell harness bar

zfissette 02-10-2012 05:13 PM

the psi isnt important, what did it put down at the dyno, what did it run at the track? And again this is a pointless debate, if you want cheap power, but a rat of an 80s mustang for 500 bucks, drop 10k into it and run 10 seconds flat.

Brags 02-10-2012 05:50 PM

FYI I believe I'm still top of dyno list for 2.2. Not zzp kit, 319 whp mustang dyno, and slipping clutch only 14 psi. New clutch and tune I will be over 400 whp this summer. Spent under ten on motor, head , turbo kit, not bad for over 100% gain in power

zfissette 02-10-2012 06:31 PM

can you honestly say if you knew then what you knew now that you would not have bought an lsj? stock lsj motor and head makes 400+ with a turbo kit. its awesome that your literally the record holder for a type of cobalt but does that matter from behind the wheel?
