My Z31 300ZX build
I figured I would share my 300ZX build with you guys. Some of you might like it!
Old Engine mods
Stock bottom end 86 turbo engine
ported and polished heads
Schneider 274/270 cams
Schneider springs
Engloid Plenum
HX35 w/ Tial 38mm gate
JWT 3BAR setup (MAF, ECU, Injectors)
Walbro 255
Southbend DXD Stage 5 SS FE Clutch
Fidanza Flywheel
CM 3" catless turbo back
2.5 IC piping with 23x11x3" IC
On this setup she made 371whp and 367wtq and ran the 1/4 in 12.776@111mph though I'm pretty sure she could do better because I only made two passes. They weren't clean passes by any stretch. If any of you guys were in Alabama for SEGME 2014 you know all about that pass
The crank pulley bolt backed off and that led to a destroyed crank snout. So now I figure I have played with a stock bottom end engine long enough. I picked up two VG33's (3.3L) for free. The stock engine is a VG30 so I pick up some free displacement. Then I went to acquiring goodies for the build.
Ported and polished heads with Rev Stainless 1mm oversized valves. Keeping my Schneider cams and springs.
I had Nistune but it never worked right. Despite numerous trips to Australia for diagostics... I decided no more of that it is time for the new hotness. So I spent $1300 on Megasquirt 3 with the Megasquirt Extra addition, as well as MAP Daddy 4BAR MAP, knock module, and boost control unit. This pretty much lets me do anything I could ever want to do. Sequential injection, nitrous, launch control, whatever really!
Now that I have proper fuel management I need a proper fuel system to go with it. I went with billet aluminum rails with 850cc Bosch injectors being fed by a Walbro 450lph pump. I also have a 3/8" aluminum hard line to run from the tank to engine bay for supply and will be running all 6AN lines from there to the rails and regulator. Fuel shouldn't be an issue. This set me back about $650.
I also scored a nitrous setup minus a couple lines from a friend for $150, I still need to go pick it up. I've been slacking. However I did get this 1 gallon fuel cell to run race fuel with my nitrous for free. Free is for me!
Then what is an engine build without ARP parts? So I went ahead and bought a bunch of ARP goodies from our friends at Acadiana Sports Car Orphanage. I got ARP head studs and ARP girdle studs as well as the stainless engine bolt kit and new plenum block offs. I figured why spend this much on a build and not spend a little to make it pretty?
Then of course we want to keep things cool so I have an oil cooler and a Champion 3 row aluminum radiator to install
Ditched the Holset for a proper turbo. Precision Billet 6262. This outta get the job done.
Southbend DXD Stage 3 Drag clutch good for at least 715ft/lbs, this replaces the other DXD clutch I'm running, it is only good for 580ft/lbs. I highly recommend these clutches.
I decided to go ahead and clean up my engine bay and repaint it... That was an adventure.
This is its current state. The front of the passenger strut tower is how the whole bay looked when I started. The drivers side is cleaned up. I'm looking to see if I took a picture before I started but I don't think I did.
And the almost finished product. I still have to finish painting brackets, brake booster.... Those will all be gloss black. Should look good on the fresh white.
Then I picked up some LQ4 coils spurr of the moment to run full sequential injection and spark with MS3x

As of this past weekend assembly of the engine has begun. It was a damn nice birthday present to see this starting to come together!
The engine should be together enough by this weekend to sit in the car to mock up and weld the new turbo down pipe. I'm also going to redo my intercooler piping with fresh new piping as well. I'll likely paint that black to boot. After that then it is wire up Megasquirt and get this sucker running!
I've also came up with an interesting idea using Megasquirt. An Android app called Shadow Dash MS, a bluetooth adaptor and a Nexus 7 tablet used for my gauge solution. I'm looking into how I can integrate the tablet into my gauge cluster to replace the tach, speedo, and temp gauge, while keeping turn signal, high beam, warning lights and fuel gauge intact. Until I figure out how to do that and make it look nice I'll be using my spare phone with Shadow Dash in a windshield mount. Shadow Dash can show all gauging in realtime as well as store 4 tunes that you can load on the fly. I think having this integrated into the dash would be invaluable. Later on I can also tie the tablet into the cars audio system and use it for multimedia as well.

They wouldn't race me when I was in the stock engine, I don't see them running me when they realize what's going on here lol. I figure I'll just race the self proclaimed Nissan god that they look up too. RB25 240SX VS VG33 300ZX

nah this is a good DD. Does not make for a good Project car imo. Not enough aftermarket support, parts are scarce (IE Good built transmissions) and its Fail Wheel Drive.

Thanks guys. It should be interesting. It's so easy to break hearts with it because nobody ever expects it to be fast. Z31's are the bastards of the Z line so they give it no thoughts. Especially being it looks so rough, it's the prefect sleeper. Part of me wants to leave it looking rough but another part of me wants to fix the body up and paint or dip it.
