NY tint laws
5% tint?
I want to get 5% tint on my car. Does anyone know the fine for tint in NY state? Also if I keep getting tickets for tint will the fine increase?

I am not sure what the fine is, but i do know that 70% is what is legal. I think that the fine would be the same, i dont think it would chance with each time. I have been lucky no one has bothered me and i have 15%.
I'm not positive what the fine is...but its probably like $250...they hate that kinda stuff...and yeah if they keep catching you with the tint...you're in for hell.
Its 70% in the front windows, and the back windows can be as dark as you want.
And yeah, I don't suggest getting anything under 15%...ever.

I think 30-35% is legal I work at a car dealer and everyone who used to get 5% on their Escalades from us used to come back and throw tickets in our faces, so we stopped doing anythign less than 30% in hte front windows, lol.
Or
I could be completely wrong, lol . We're screwed if we have a 2 doors because we cant legally tint the front windows very much
CORRECTION: Yea everyone else but me was right 70% is ther legal limit I checked with our prep guy, lol. oh well. 70% is basically what a dirty stock window looks like, lol. Not worth it I think im going to get 35%

i have 15% and i got a $100 ticket recently, the cop told me 70% visibility is the legal limit on the front and back side windows (including the small triangle shaped windows on the coupes). The back window doesn't matter. He said most cops won't pull you over for the small windows.
lol...I asked all these questions in hopes to get out of it, acting like i didn't know it was illegal...didn't work.
hope this helps

I have 35% on the front and 20% on the back. I was stopped in my GrandAm which had the same tint percent, my front windows were down, but the cop asked me to roll them up because he wanted to see if the front windows were as dark as the back. When i rolled them up, he said "Well, I can still see through them, you should get them removed because some other officers might have issues with them" In all honesty, 35% on my front looks pretty dark because of the color of the interior. I wouldn't go below 35%. I have 50% on the front window of my wifes car, which just gives it a little hazy look, but her interior is also tan.

I live in Florida 9 months out of the year and from what I understand you can have 28% tint in the front windows and 15% in the rear windows, im assuming because of the sun. Since I live down there for so long and when I come up here its only in the sumemr should I really be too concerned? I dunnow at to do.
Hrmmm, I just posted on a similiar thread about this subject.

YES, if it is illegal in your state then yes, you can be blamed for obstruction of view, especially at night.
Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow a windshield or front side windows that are dark. The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light. Seventy percent or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window. This law also applies to the rear window unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. The mirrors must give the driver a full and clear view behind the vehicle.
If the vehicle is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible, the rear side windows must also allow at least seventy percent of light from the outside to pass through the window.
It is illegal to sell, offer for sale, or install glass that does not comply with this law. It is illegal to operate a vehicle with glass that does not comply with this law.
