Proper spoiler removal/swap
Proper spoiler removal/swap
Ok, I'm sure this is a redundant topic by now, but nowhere on the forum have I been able to find the information I'm looking for. What I need to know is the PROPER removal technique for a high rise spoiler, without risking damage to the trunk lid or spoiler itself. Also, when performing a swap (ie: high rise to low rise), what is the procedure to securely install the new one (ie: glue type, heat gun, etc)?
My concern may seem a little paranoid, but I just don't want to damage any parts of the car.

I hate my low rise, why? Because water gets stuck under it when I wash the car, no matter how good I dry it, there's always a few drops that escape my reach ;(

first.. not to be mean, but search.
that being said.. the best, easiest way to do it, is to find someone who is local, has the same color and you mutually want to swap. he has high mount, you have low mount or vice versa.
^ you would just swap the entire trunk, and wing removal would not be necessary.
if you must remove them due to color or condition differences, you should do it in the sun, on a hot day.. and use a hair dryer to heat the glue up. when it is hot enough, you'll know it because it is going to come off with ease. do not yank on it. be careful not to let little stringy pieces of tape/glue land on the paint. (i'm assuming that you would have removed the 4 bolts located at the base of the wing.. you'll find the head of them located under the carpeting of the decklid. you do not have to remove the carpet, just pull it up a little.)
if there is residue on the trunk, it should come off with a little heat and wd-40. do a youtube search for "debadging" and you'll see 2 sti guys with a video how to for this. it will help.
3m double sided tape is what the factory uses to hold the wing, and badges on. this is what you will use to attach the wing to the other trunk. bolt them up, and call it a day.
Salesman, I am very proud of you. That might be the most civil post I have ever seen you make.
to the OP, unbolt the bolts, heat up the glue, use fishing line. I hear they are a pain in the ass and trunk swap is easiest. go to the "removing exterior trim" thread. in there I posted the link to debadging. It is amazingly simple the way those two STI guys do it.

Thanks for the good info guys. How difficult is it to remove the trunk then? Is it just a few bolts and wiring harnesses?
And for the record, I did do a search beforehand, it's just that the results I found were rather jaded.
Thanks again.

well I in fact will not be removing it, because the highrise spoiler on the bottom of it had 3 holes on each side for mounting and the lowrise has 2 on each side for mounting. Im taking it to my dealer tomorrow to have them install it properly for under 100 dollars they said, should take less then 2 hours since they will have to drill a hole and what not and I was not about to do that...
also I see a lot of people saying trade trunks, but i got to wondering how do u play on using your key in your keyhole on the trunk when it in fact is for the other car which it was on and not yours? i know mine has a trunk key on the clicker but still. I know u could always swap out keyholes but hell that might be more work then just taking the wings off imho anyways.. thought i would let you all know what I decided to do instead.
Here is the link for the spoiler for which in fact I did buy

I talked with the dealership and the factory spoiler which is just like this is plastic. they wanted $500 for just the spoiler which was primed black. so I would have to of had labor + paint included to that, so that company I bought it off of gave me a cheaper alternative..
The ONLY flaw with my spoiler fromt his company is on the sides of the wings where the plates are its held together with small screws because it is fiberglass and factory does not.. but concidering it is about a 400$ cheaper alternative I do not mind...

honestly, its a BITCH to get the spoilers off. i did that when i swapped mine for the high rise.
easy part is unscrewing the bolts, hard part is getting the adhesive off.
i used fishing line, stuff that is supposed to dissolve adhesive, and a blow dryer to heat it up.. and then tried pulling thru with the fishing line... OVER AND OVER until it came off.
it sucks. but u do what u gotta do.

its easier to swap entire trunks with someone who has the same color, just unplug all the wiring harnesses and take out your key hole lock and swap trunks and replug the harnesses and insert your keyhole lock in the new trunk and your done i think its 4 bolts and harnesses and key hole its all there is to it, i swapped a clean trunk with a ss/sc highrise and me and the guy it took about a hour tops to lign up the trunk right and everything.
I just did this swap on the weekend, and both spoilers had the exact same holes. 2 on each side. I swapped from Low wing to High Rise.
TOOLS REQUIRED :
Fishing Line
Hair Dryer
10mm Socket
thick 2 sided tape or the actual tape kit from GM. (expensive)
1. Take your new wing, and cut your 2 sided tape to match the underside of the spoiler. It will take a few pieces, and some patience to get it cut right. Install all pieces of tape. Or if you have the tape kit, it obviously sticks on properly.
2. Open your trunk, remove the liner that covers the trunk lid.
3. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the spoiler on. Wing will not fall off, dont worry. its stuck on there good.
4. Use your hair dryer, and heat up the bolts and surrounding area as hot as you can get it. 2-3 minutes of direct heat should do it. Do one side at a time.
5. once one side is hot, close the trunk lid. and apply pressure upward to pull the spoiler off the trunk lid. you will have to apply constant pressure, while the glue starts to let go. you may have to do this a couple times, but the glue will let go. If you have problems, use the fishing line to cut between the spoiler and the deck lid, and repeat the heating process.
6. When the glue is about to let go, release some of the pressure you are applying, because you dont want to be pushing up too hard when it lets go.
7. Repeat process for the other side of the spoiler post.
8. Remove left over double sided tape from trunk lid, clean properly using goo gone or rubbing alcohol.
9. Put new spoiler through holes and push down firmly so the tape will hold the wing. Open the trunk lid again, (have a friend hold the spoiler while you tighten the bolts firmly)
10. Replace trunk liner... Voila.
